Heading into the last three races of the regular season, Bubba Wallace is currently aiming for his second playoff campaign in a row. Last season, Wallace qualified for the playoffs for the first time in his career and looks to be almost on track to repeat that this year as well. He is currently in 16th place on the standings, with only a +3 advantage over Ross Chastain.
Despite the tight margin, the #23 driver is feeling confident about his playoff hopes heading into the next three races. When asked on Saturday whether he's feeling good about the last three races of the season, Wallace said:
“Yeah, for sure. The last five races, I had a top-three average finish. Definitely the mojo is there, but that is the past. It’s like Chase (Elliott) said it the best a few years ago, 'The past success doesn’t mean future success.' It is a new opportunity," he said [at 12:25].
Bubba Wallace remarked that he's glad the next three races aren't road course races, even though he's enjoying his time on road courses this year. Wallace claimed that the next three tracks are "good tracks", which help maintain the momentum. However, Wallace also touched upon the increased 'workload' that came with it towards the closing stages of the season but expressed belief in his team to work through it.
"We have enough great people on this team to dig all through it and capitalize on it," he added.
Bubba Wallace opens up on the key to the #23 team finding more consistency in 2024
When a journalist asked Bubba Wallace about the key to the #23 team's consistency this year, Wallace said it's because of taking it easy and working through problems. So far this season, Wallace has recorded consecutive top 5 finishes twice, including in the last two races.
Wallace said that not letting the disappointing outcomes get to them and focusing on churning out results on good days has allowed them to be consistent regardless of the situation.
"We’ve shown up with a lot of speed the last few weeks. We’ve shown up with our heads in the game, and we’ve been close a couple of times. I said that at the beginning of the year – you gotta keep putting your name in the hat, and we went a long time not even having right size of hat on. Definitely showing up and being in the game, from the start of practice to the end of the race which is so hard to do every weekend that is our main goal – just to be in the game, and you don’t know when you are not in it until the green flag falls," he described. Wallace claimed that in the Next Gen era, drivers need to fight hard with their racecar while bearing in mind the unpredictable aspect of how races tend to play out. The 30-year-old then emphasized the importance track positions had, with passing being so difficult to pull off as a single mistake can prove to be very costly. The 23XI driver added that he's done a lot of things to give up track position but lately, the #23 team is syncing in better and progressing well.
Wallace then concluded his argument by reiterating the importance of avoiding any kind of complacency or relying on past results as a parameter for future results.
