Jeff Gordon recently gave an insight into his role at Hendrick Motorsports. The 4x Cup champion drove for Rick Hendrick's team from the start to the end of his career. And after a brief stint as a FOX Sports TV analyst, Gordon joined HMS in an executive role, currently serving as the Vice Chairman of arguably the biggest team in NASCAR.
Recently, during an appearance on Kevin Harvick's Happy Hour podcast, Gordon was asked about what he does on a daily basis at HMS.
The former #24 driver claimed that one would have to walk in his shoes to get a true feel of his role because it changes from day to day. This was something Jeff Gordon deemed equal parts exciting and 'nerve-wracking.'
"It's exciting because there's never a dull moment there's always something that's that's coming up... Mainly it's working with partners and doing what Rick Hendrick always did and still does for Hendrick Motorsports which is just provide the best resources and put the best people together to go have success on the racetrack," Gordon described. Gordon further gave an insight into his role at HMS as he shared he floats around and goes where he's needed the most. However, most of his time is spent with a few particular departments within the organization as he elaborated:
"Most of the time is spent with our marketing sales department on looking at our partnerships that we currently have. How do we expand those? How do we bring more value to them? How do we build our driver brands up and our own brand of Hendrick Motorsports? How do we find new partners?" [3:51]
Jeff Gordon claims his new role is a big change from his driving days, but he feels comfortable
Jeff Gordon, who has spent all of his professional career in NASCAR with Hendrick Motorsports, shared that throughout his whole life, he has been part of a team. However, for the 4x Cup champion, being at Hendrick Motorsports is the biggest team, the ultimate team' he has been a part of.
Gordon acknowledged that compared to the major part of his career, he's now in a different role at HMS. But he's still part of a big team that includes some 'amazing people' such as Jeff Andrews, Chad Knaus, and more.
But despite him being in a different role, which mostly pertains to communication with marketing and sales department, Jeff Gordon shared that he stills stays in touch with the competition departments.
"I go to the competition meetings we have of task for I'm in meetings I'm always in meetings I'm answering emails and I'm in meetings," he said. [4:35]
Gordon added that his current role is 'quite a departure' from what he knows, which was being behind the wheel of a racecar.
But the HMS Vice Chairman said that he feels 'very comfortable' in this role because he knows racing, and now he has gotten to know the business of racing.
