Josh Berry radioed his frustrations regarding NASCAR’s decision to retire his car at Kansas Speedway. Following a multi-car crash on the opening lap, Berry was asked to get out of his No. 4 Ford Mustang, which was towed to the campground instead of the pits.
Berry is a 33-year-old NASCAR Cup Series driver racing with the Stewart-Haas Racing team. However, this season marks his last year with SHR as the Tennessee native is heading to Wood Brothers Racing in 2025.
In a post by SiriusXM NASCAR host Davey Segal on X (formerly Twitter), Josh Berry was told by the safety crew to get out of the car while his team was telling him to stay in. The driver wanted to get to the pits for a tire change but his car was taken to the infield.
“They got me in the f***ing campground, Rodney,” Berry said.
Josh Berry got involved in a wreck with drivers such as Ty Dillon and playoff contender Chase Elliott on lap 1. His No. 4 car sustained damage, including four flat tires. While other drivers were reportedly towed to the pits for repairs, Berry was forced to retire from the Hollywood Casino 400.
No. 4 team crew chief Rodney Childers tried to talk to the safety crews but no one got back on him. In response, Berry said on the radio:
“This is f***ed up.”
After his early exit at Kansas Speedway, Josh Berry shared his point of view on what went down during the race. He said via Ford:
“We got clipped and spun, and we had four flat tires. I assumed they were going to tow the car to the pits, which is what I was asking for, and then they dropped my window net and told me to get out. Rodney told me to stay in because all we needed was tires. They were telling me to get out. Then they towed me into the campground, so I was just out there chilling with the fans,” Berry said.
The driver added:
“At that point, they said they had to get a rollback, and they finally made me get out. Rodney was trying to talk to somebody and couldn’t get anybody on the phone. I don't know what I am missing. I have seen plenty of cars get towed to the pits and get tires put on, so I don't know if I am missing something or if there was something different than normal, but that was an experience for sure.”
With Josh Berry out of the race, the Kannapolis-based outfit has three drivers left on the field including Chase Briscoe, the sole SHR driver to qualify for the NASCAR Cup Series playoffs.
“That’s the most screwed up thing I’ve seen or been involved with” - Josh Berry’s crew chief Rodney Childers on DNF at Kansas
Rodney Childers took to X and wrote his frustrations in a post while the race was still running. He argued that the No. 4 Ford Mustang of Josh Berry only needed tires yet the safety crew didn’t tow the car to the pits for a chance to repair it.
Childers, who won the 2014 NASCAR Cup Series championship with Kevin Harvick, said the incident with the safety crew was the worst he’s seen over his 25 years in the sport. He wrote on X:
“I’ve seen a lot of things over my 25 years in the Cup Series, but that’s the most screwed up thing I’ve ever seen or been involved with. All we needed was tires with air in them. And how many times have we drug cars to the pit stall to put tires on them. Why today?!? ”
For the 2025 season, Childers will join Spire Motorsports as SHR will shut down its operations.
