Kenny Wallace has called for NASCAR to give Denny Hamlin more recognition for his efforts in promoting the sport and that Hamlin's contributions should be rewarded more.
The No. 11 driver for Joe Gibbs Racing, Denny Hamlin is one of the most popular drivers in stock car racing. He hosts a podcast called 'Actions Detrimental' and is also a NASCAR team car co-owner with NBA star Michael Jordan.
In the latest episode of "Kenny Conversation," Kenny Wallace talked with Danielle Trotta to discuss that drivers need to be more involved in boosting NASCAR’s popularity (08:45):
"I think we need more of them, and I'm not asking, I'm not asking anybody to be what they're not. But Denny Hamlin is doing as much for our sport.
"I know that he's outspoken, and sometimes he ruffles feathers, and NASCAR probably is like, you know, they should pay Denny Hamlin extra money because he's saving the sport. But he's doing a lot; he's drawing a lot of eyeballs,” Wallace said.
Wallace also compared the current situation in NASCAR to other sports and believes that the sport lacks the high-profile personalities other sports have. He thinks NASCAR needs more prominent drivers to maintain this momentum.
Wallace also said that he would like Kyle Busch to be more active and added that Busch is not winning races lately and is not on TV as much.
"Revenue is in the millions and millions" - Denny Hamlin on Wood Brothers Racing's Daytona win
Denny Hamlin commented on the win by Harrison Burton at the Daytona International Speedway on Saturday.
In the latest episode of the Actions Detrimental podcast, he suggested a big increase in revenue for Burton's team, Wood Brothers Racing. Hamlin said:
"It’s great to see, you know, the Wood Brothers get their 100th. They’ve been stuck on that 99 for quite some time now.
"This is, as he mentioned in his post race, such a huge deal financially for them over the next two years. You know, the revenue is in the millions and millions of more that they’re going to get now than what they were being, you know, ranked 34th."
Hamlin is eighth in the Cup Series standings with 712 points after NASCAR penalized him and his team for breaking engine inspection rules.
That came from Hamlin’s win at the Bristol Motor Speedway in mid-March. He lost 75 points and one race wins worth playoff points. Before the point penalty, Hamlin was third in the standings, 28 points behind the leader.
