Tyler Reddick voiced his strong disapproval of Austin Dillon’s last-lap move that allowed Dillon to win his first NASCAR Cup Series race in two seasons in the Cook Out 400 at Richmond Raceway on Sunday (August 11). Reddick believes that Dillon was aggressive and potentially reckless.
Reddick, who finished P3, is not happy with what Dillon perceived as an overly aggressive move, intentionally wrecking Joey Logano and Denny Hamlin to win the race.
Speaking to Frontstretch's Trey Lyle after the race, Tyler Reddick didn’t sugarcoat his words and expressed his frustration on the controversial finish at Richmond.
Reddick said:
“Yeah, he dumped a #22. I mean, he didn't get in deep enough, and then he throttled up and wrecked him. Then, when he realized he wasn't going to beat the #11 back, he right-hooked him into the fence. So, it's just crazy shit, honestly.
“I know how important it is to win races, the position he's in. I think he's 32nd in points. I understand it, but they've always told us to right-hooking people is not the way to do it.”
On the final lap, Logano was charging towards his second win of the season, but Dillon, who was running behind him, hit the rear bumper of Logano’s #22 car, which sent the #22 spinning.
Dillon then moved low on the track and hit Hamlin, sending him to the outside wall. Both the contacts helped Dillon to qualify for the playoffs.
“It's a great points night” - Tyler Reddick comments on his outing after top-5 finish
The #45 23XI Racing driver reflected on the positive side of the race. After securing a solid P3 finish, Reddick admitted that it was a valuable night for his team in terms of points, as only three races are remaining in the playoffs.
Tyler Reddick is proud of his #45 team’s performance and the 40 valuable points they gained, which brought him closer to points leader Kyle Larson in the championship standings.
Summing up his Richmond outing, Reddick said:
“It's a great points night. All things considered. I guess, I'm glad I wasn't leading the race coming to the end. I would have wrecked and finished somewhere outside the top 20. So, this is a points night that we needed. I'm really proud of everyone on the most Mobile 1 Toyota Camry. It's the night the 23XI needed. We closed in a little bit more on the points lead. So, all in all, a solid night.”
With a P3 finish, Tyler Reddick moved to second from third position in the Cup Series points table. He is just five points behind Larson to take the top spot.
