After winning the Brickyard 400, Kyle Larson claimed that he would love to return to the racetrack next year in May once again. Earlier this season, Larson attempted the Double of Indy 500 and Coke 600. But despite a promising buildup to the race, his run in the Arrow McLaren single seater ended in an 18th-place finish.
But after winning his fourth Cup race of the season, Larson claimed he would love to run the 500 again and that he's hopeful that something would be announced soon.
This was something Kyle Larson was confronted with in his post-race press conference when a journalist asked the #5 driver if there would be any hurdles in his second Indy 500 run.
"I don’t know. I mean, we definitely have been talking about it. I think weighing what’s important to everybody. It sounds good, I’ll say, so far, but things could change. Yeah, we’ll see. I would obviously love to do it. I think everybody knows I would love to do it because in my mind I did not get to do it this year. I didn’t get to at least do the double," Larson said. [16:10]
Larson hoped for the pieces to fall into place so he could hopefully do another Double attempt in 2025.
Following this response, the Hendrick Motorsports driver was asked whether having the good fortune of winning the Brickyard 400 gave him faith to have a better Indy 500 next season.
Kyle Larson mentioned that in 2025, with the new hybrid engines, he anticipates more opportunities for teams to be faster. Having said that, he expressed his hopes of winning the prestigious race one day.
"I will say it’s pretty special. Hopefully, someday I can get a chance to win the 500. I’ve won on the dirt track on the BC39, got to kiss the bricks there. Now today in the 400. I guess there’s one more to check off, which is the Indy 500, which would be pretty special," he added.
But while Larson's responses to the questions surrounding another Indy 500 run suggested that he wanted to have another go, his team owner, Rick Hendrick, didn't accept nor deny the same.
When a journalist asked the billionaire owner whether he has given a green flag to Larson's second Indy 500 attempt considering his comments of coming back to IMS in May, Mr. H had a two-word response.
"Not yet," Hendrick said. [2:15]
Kyle Larson claims winning the Brickyard 400 completes the Double circle of this year
After winning his first ever Brickyard 400, Kyle Larson explained why winning the crown jewel meant a little bit more to him this year.
Larson claimed his win meant more, given how his Double attempt unfolded in May, him winning at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in a car which had the paint scheme from the Coca-Cola 600.
"I think just with getting to compete in the Indy 500, then having the weather kind of get in the mix and not being able to compete in the 600, then getting to come here and run the same paint scheme I was supposed to run at the 600, ultimately win in the fashion that we did with a lot of things kind of going our way there at the end," Larson said. It's worth mentioning that towards the end, a caution brought out by Kyle Busch and then a race-ending caution brought out by Ryan Preece ensured Larson's win.
Kyle Larson added that winning on Sunday was "pretty emotional" for him, and it made him feel like the circle of Double in 2024 was completed.
