NASCAR spotter Eddie D’Hondt has criticized Vice President Kamala Harris for focusing on Lebanon’s issues while the US deals with the aftermath of Hurricane Helene.
Hurricane Helene is now the second-deadliest US hurricane in 50 years, after Katrina. It hit the Southeastern US in September and has caused major damage to power and roads, and flooded many areas. At least 227 people have lost their lives due to the disaster in six states, particularly North Carolina.
D’Hondt, who now works with rookie driver Josh Berry at Stewart-Haas Racing, expressed his frustration on X. He said the focus should be on helping Americans first.
"It’s none of my business which side of the political fence you are on. That said, I respect everybody’s views & opinions, without remorse. But, this is vehemently wrong on so many levels & that should be the view from both parties. We are amicably Americans. This is wrong! Come on," D’Hondt wrote.
D’Hondt was responding to a post that pointed out people in North Carolina are suffering from flooding and losing their homes because of the hurricane.
Meanwhile, Harris shared a statement about the worsening humanitarian crisis in Lebanon. She announced $157 million in aid for food, water, and shelter, which has raised the total help to Lebanon to $385 million this year.
NASCAR community supporting efforts after Hurricane Helene
Former NASCAR driver Greg Biffle has gained attention for using his private helicopter to deliver supplies and reach people stranded in North Carolina. The 54-year-old, along with his family, has been helping people in areas without food, fuel, or power.
"Only way we were able to find someone stranded in the mountains at bottom of steep canyon. 6 attempts to land due to difficulty but we got there - got him a chainsaw, EpiPens, insulin, chicken food, formula, gas, 2 stroke oil, and sandwiches premade from Harris Teeter before we left," Biffle posted on X.
Biffle has teamed up with Polaris and SpaceX to provide generators and three Starlink internet systems to those affected by the storm. ESPN analyst Marty Smith has even called for Biffle to be awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom for his work.
Moreover, NASCAR driver, Joey Logano has pledged $250,000 to help in relief efforts through the Joey Logano Foundation.
"Our hearts go out to all those affected from the recent hurricane and the @JoeyLoganoFDN will be donating $250,000 to help in relief efforts. $25,000 is already sent to the @ConvoyofHope, as we know from years of experience working together, they are a great organization to tackle unfortunate situations like this,” wrote Logano.
NASCAR teams, including Hendrick Motorsports, Joe Gibbs Racing and Trackhouse Racing, are also assisting. Michael Jordan and his team 23XI Racing have announced a donation of $1 million towards relief efforts.
