Corey Lajoie spilled the reason behind his wrecking Kyle Busch at Pocono Raceway during Sunday's NASCAR Cup Series race to renowned FOX journalist, Bob Pockrass. However, the fans on X (formerly Twitter) did not approve of his explanation.
The Spire Motorsports driver tangled with the two-time Cup Series champion following a late-race restart on lap 121. With the green flag conditions restored, Lajoie got to the inside of his Spire Motorsports teammate, Zane Smith, and attempted to pass Kyle Busch, who in turn blocked him.
Lajoie then turned the nose of his car slightly and left-hooked Kyle Busch as the field ran 5-wide (as reported by Frontstretch) through turn 1. As a result, Busch spun out and back into the track, taking multiple cars out with him.
During the post-race interview with Pockrass, Lajoie recalled his contact with Kyle Busch and said,
"I got a big push by the 16 (AJ Allmendinger). When you are 20th back there, it's in the hornet's nest and you're seven-wide into 1. If you're not the guy on the bottom, somebody else behind you is going to jam it in there and put you freaking middle, right?"
"I got to the left rear of the No. 8, and he blocked it once," Lajoie continued. "And I just kind of held the wheel straight, and I was almost anticipating our bumpers kind of lining up and giving him a little bit of a shove. But when he blocked it the second time, it just turned him across my nose."
Several fans reacted to Corey Lajoie's version of the incident, with one stating that they were tired of him.
"Tired of this guy, he's a caution every week," the fan said.
Thinking that Lajoie was lying, another fan commented:
"Blatant lying, Kyle did not block twice, you went up into him 💀💀."
Here are a few other reactions to Corey Lajoie's take on his on-track incident with Kyle Busch.
"Apparently I and everybody else missed the "second block"" a fan said.
"Did he forget we can see the in car?" another added.
"He straight up left hooked KB 🤣🤣 if there isn’t a fine Tuesday…Nascar will have ALOT of questions to be answered!" a fan wrote.
Kyle Busch had entered the race 98 points behind the provisional playoff cutline. However, after the 400-mile race, the Richard Childress Racing driver is 102 points behind the elimination line. Besides that, Busch also received his 5th DNF in the last seven races after finishing 32nd at the "Tricky Triangle". LaJoie, on the other hand, finished the race 19th.
Corey LaJoie holds Kyle Busch's "second block" responsible for the tangle
Corey LaJoie said that had Busch not launched the second block in the former, they would not have made contact at all. The #7 speedster wasn't apologetic for his actions as he felt that Kyle Busch would have done the same thing had LaJoie been on the receiving end.
"I’m not going to say sorry. I’m not sorry about it, because that was the thing. If the shoe was on the other foot, the exact same thing would’ve happened, and I think he would probably say that," explained LaJoie, as reported by NASCAR.
Speaking of the "second block", LaJoie said:
"I’m not the guy that wants to wreck anybody, but I think if Kyle blocks only once, then we both go around the corner and live to fight another day. But that second block that he thought he had it covered and he didn’t was what did him in and did a couple other guys in."
With that said, only five races remain till NASCAR kicks off its 2024 playoffs, starting with the round of 16 opener; the Quaker State 400 at Atlanta Motor Speedway. Whether Kyle Busch makes this year's playoffs remains unanswered for now.
The 39-year-old is currently 18th in the Drivers' standings, with 428 points to his name. He has amassed six top-10 finishes so far in 2024, with his best performance being a third-place finish at the Ambetter Health 400.
As for Corey LaJoie, he is currently 30th in the standings, bagging 301 points so far. The 32-year-old hasn't had a single top-10 finish since ending fourth at the Daytona 500. LaJoie's 19th-place finish at the Pocono Raceway saw him bag his first top-20 finish since the Toyota/Save Mart 350 at the Sonoma Raceway.
