Tony Stewart's Stewart-Haas Racing reportedly raked in $160000 a few weeks before shutting down its operations. The North Carolina-based former NASCAR outfit signed a sponsorship deal with Texas A&M University for two of the final Cup Series races.
Tony Stewart and Gene Haas-led team witnessed a drastic change at the end of the 2023 season. After the team's winless season, Kevin Harvick, the 2014 Cup Series champion retired from the sport. It was dubbed as one of the reasons why big sponsors' interest began fading in SHR, instigating them to withdraw for the 2024 season. Some names are Hunt Brothers Pizza, Smithfield, Rheem, Busch Light, Go Bowling, and more.
In May this past season, Tony Stewart and Gene Haas announced that SHR would no longer function after the 2024 season, releasing over 300 employees from the organization.
But before wrapping its operations, the team secured a handsome deal. While many sponsorship details are kept under wraps, the information was obtained through open record requests. According to reports from Jayski, the deal was inked in October for a maximum amount of $160,000.
The consideration included Chase Briscoe's Las Vegas race, Josh Berry's camouflage at the finale at Phoenix, and several other deliverables such as social media shoutouts in race-related posts. Briscoe parked the #14 Texas A&M University Ford in 26th place while his rookie teammate posted a 24th-place finish in Phoenix.
Texas A&M University's VP opened up on the "fantastic opportunity" of partnering with Tony Stewart's team
Texas A&M University is the state's first public institution for higher studies opened in 1876. The University heavily invests in sporting activities, by preparing the students, sponsoring sporting events, and more. It's worth mentioning Texas &AM had the biggest sponsorship budget for the 2022-23 season, topping $194.7 million.
Texas A&M's vice president and chief marketing and communications officer, R. Ethan Braden, expressed the opportunity to be a great approach to show that the University stands for the people who have committed to the nation.
He elaborated on the Tony Stewart deal which involved the military-inspired NextGen car wraps and said (via Texas A&M official release):
“With millions of engaged fans, this partnership with Stewart-Haas Racing represents a fantastic opportunity to put the Aggie Spirit front and center and further show the nation what Texas A&M University stands for. We look forward to cheering on Chase Briscoe in Aggie Maroon at Las Vegas and Josh Berry at the season finale in Phoenix, where we’ll showcase Texas A&M’s appreciation for our country and our military prior to Veterans Day."
Joe Custer, SHR's former president expressed his feelings about the partnership. He mentioned being thrilled to ally with Texas A&M University, which has a "long history of supporting the nation's veterans."
