Brett Griffin, a former spotter for retired NASCAR Cup Series drivers Clint Bowyer and Jeff Burton, recently discussed the importance of increasing diversity in sports broadcasting. He drew a comparison between stock car racing and college football broadcasting, highlighting the distinct approaches to commentary.
The NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision has a diverse range of broadcasters each week, introducing fresh perspectives. With over 40 analysts and reporters, the division offers a wider variety of voices and experiences. Some of the well-known broadcasters are Chris Fowler, Kirk Herbstreit, Jesse Palmer, and Dave Pasch.
On the other hand, NASCAR's broadcasting team on FOX is limited to eight individuals. Booth broadcasting reporters include Mike Joy, Clint Bowyer, and the former NASCAR Cup Series champion Kevin Harvick. Race Strategy, Technical, and Rules analysis section features Larry McReynolds.
Jamie Little, Regan Smith, and Josh Sims are the only three pit reporters. For the pre-race show, Chris Myers hosts alongside analysts Clint Bowyer and Kevin Harvick. Michael Waltrip then takes over as the grid-walk reporter.
Reflecting upon the limited number of people taking over multiple roles in NASCAR broadcasting, Brett Griffin wrote:
"The best thing about college football is the diversity of broadcasters. NASCAR is too much from the same folks week after week. We gotta figure out how to make some of the energy get better around here."
After being a part of the Door Bumper Clear podcast for years, Griffin recently announced his departure.
“I’ve had a blast”: NASCAR insider pens down heartfelt message announcing his departure from Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s media company
Brett Griffin announced his departure from former Cup Series driver Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s co-founded media company, Dirty Mo Media. Griffin hosted the Door Bumper Clear podcast along with Freddie Kraft, T.J. Majors, and Case Boat.
Griffin was a part of the podcast since its debut in 2016 and is also a brand activist and sports marketer. He has spotted NASCAR Cup Series drivers like Jeff Burton and Clint Bowyer in the past and recently spotted Richard Childress Racing driver Austin Dillion.
The Dirty Mo Media was founded by Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Mike Davis in 2013. Griffin spent almost a decade with the production house before parting ways with them. He encapsulated his experience over the years and wrote:
"Thank you, listeners. I’ve had a blast on this journey and my goal was simple - share the knowledge and experiences I’ve had during my career. Let’s laugh and learn as we go and we did just that. Ep 355 was my last. ❤️ "
In the last episode, Brett Griffin focused on the 2024 Cup Series recap, discussing how Team Penske driver Joey Logano bagged his third championship despite having the lowest average finish in the season.
