NASCAR awards the NASCAR Cup Series Championship to the best-performing stock car driver at the end of the season. After the completion of 36 races which includes the regular season and playoff events, the results are determined by a tally of points. The first-ever Championship title was awarded to Red Byron in 1949 and the defending title Cup Series title holder is Ryan Blaney.

The NASCAR Cup Series has witnessed 36 different championships since its inaugural season in 1949. Out of which, NASCAR legends like Richard Petty, Dale Earnhardt, and Jimmie Johnson have the record of achieving the title seven times in their career span. However, without the backing of their team and their owners, these successes wouldn't have been possible.

Here's a list of the top five NASCAR teams with the maximum number of championships in the sport's history:

#1 Hendrick Motorsports

Founded by Rick Hendrick, one of the most successful NASCAR organizations has a total of 14 Cup Series championship titles and 308 race victories. Out of the 14, seven of the titles were won by Jimmie Johnson, and the latest championship victory came by the hand of #5 Kyle Larson in 2021. Moreover, HMS has three Truck Series and one Xfinity Series title under their belt.

#2 Petty Enterprises

Started by Lee Petty, former Cup Series champion and father of NASCAR Hall of Famer Richard Petty, this team has 10 NASCAR championships. Seven of them were won by 'the King' Petty himself. They have amassed 268 Cup Series triumphs under their name.

#3 Richard Childress Racing

Owned by former NASCAR driver, Richard Childress. RCR has accumulated six championship titles under the NASCAR legend Dale Earnhardt, who died tragically in 2001. RCR has a total of 116 Cup Series victories under their name. Childress-owned RCR has also won five Xfinity Series and two Truck Series titles.

#4 Junior Johnson & Associates

Junior Johnson was a former driver, engineer, and team owner in the Cup Series. They have achieved six Drivers' championships. NASCAR legends Cale Yarborough and Darrell Waltrip were responsible for bringing home three championship titles each.

#5 Joe Gibbs Racing

Former NFL coach Joe Gibbs founded this famous NASCAR organization in 1992. JGR has a total of five Cup Series championships with 214 Cup victories. They also have four Xfinity Series titles to their name. Two-time Cup Series champion Kyle Busch was the last driver to bring home the title in 2019.
