Tyler Reddick was asked about his thoughts on the remaining two races of the regular season at Daytona and Darlington. Following NASCAR taking away Austin Dillon's playoff berth, there are currently two spots on the playoff standings on which drivers can make it to the post-season without a win.
Notably, one of the drivers who can make it into the playoffs without a win is Reddick's teammate Bubba Wallace.
Reddick was asked for his opinion on how dramatic he expects the next two races to be, to which he said:
"I feel like it always is. The first year with the Next Gen car was pretty crazy. Last year was really close unfortunately between two Toyotas with Ty (Gibbs) and Bubba (Wallace). It’s just how this can go sometimes. It doesn’t take many bad weeks to put you in a bad spot. But also you have the top, a lot of us are running really good." [17:05]
Reddick added that a driver can never know when a race would turn into a bad day. He pointed to the way the race played out for Kyle Larson at Michigan.
The #45 driver added that on both speed and points, it was tight between drivers, which has become a characteristic of the Next Gen era:
"That’s what this Next Gen era has really done, brought us closer together from the front of the field to the back, just the little things, little moments in your day that can affect you so much. Typically, in the Next Gen era, if you’re at the back of the lead lap going into stage three, you’re fighting to get 15th. That’s what made this day so cool," he added.
Reddick added that the competition out on the track is only separated by a matter of a few feet here or there, getting in line, and so forth. He emphasized that the competition is "just so tight" from the front to the back, and a simple mistake could cost a lot of spots on the track.
Tyler Reddick on what has helped him this year to improve as a racecar driver
During the post-race press conference, a reporter asked Tyler Reddick what he has been doing to improve as a racecar driver, something reflected in his results this year.
Reddick replied that he has been trying to keep "a level head," adding:
"It’s so easy to get really upset and frustrated when you have a car that’s running top five all day, you have a bad pit stop, something goes awry. I think of Indy a couple weeks ago where we are kind of on our strategy, things are going to work out, a caution falls at the worst time. It’s so easy get pissed, kind of throw it all away, let your anger get the best of you," Reddick said. [5:25]
Reddick said that he feels he's been doing "a better job" keeping a clear head, resetting, and moving on to the next move on the track.
Reddick added that as he is in a spot where now he's battling for the regular season championship, his mindset has become to think about more than just his track position, leading to smarter decsions.
