Corey LaJoie was involved in a major wreck while battling for a spot in the top 20 in Stage 3 of the Firekeepers Casino 400. LaJoie made contact with #10 Noah Gragson's left rear and went sideways, flipped, and slid upside down on the backstretch.
The postponed NASCAR Cup Series race at Michigan International Speedway raised safety concerns when Spire Motorsports driver Corey LaJoie got airborne unexpectedly after being spun on lap 136. After being slid with wheels up for a good amount of time, Lajoie's Chevy made contact with the inside wall and then ended up flipping three more times before coming to a halt on the infield grass.
Here's a look at the video posted by NASCAR on X:
The 32-year-old LaJoie exited his Chevy on his own and was brought right away to the infield care center. Lajoie was seemingly unscathed by this unexpected crash as the hood flaps and the roof were still intact after #7 got flipped and slid.
"I find a way to flip it upside down" - Corey LaJoie on his airborne crash at Michigan
So far, Corey LaJoie has had a tough 2024 season and this Michigan wreck has added to his misery. After being released from the infield car center, LaJoie shared his point of view on the Stage 3 incident.
The Charlotte native LaJoie said (via NASCAR):
"That’s just about the way the year’s gone, You know, we have a good car, and I find a way to flip it upside down. Twice this year, we’ve been upside down, and I haven’t been upside down in my whole career. Unfortunately, that’s how the year for our No. 7 team. We’ve had speed, just haven’t been able to put it all together. But the No. 10 chopped me a couple of times, especially off (Turn 2) and I had a run, and I don’t know, I haven’t seen the replay yet. If he pulled it off the wall when I was trying to get his left rear. … It was a ride, buddy."
"There’s sparks and dirt and all sorts of stuff coming in. I just hate that our Garner Trucking Camaro got a little dinged up. I think we had a top 12, top 10 car today. I hate that we ended up on our roof" he added.
LaJoie has been driving for Spire Motorsports since 2021. But soon, he will be looking for a ride for the 2025 Cup Series season as he recently announced his departure from Spire.
With an underwhelming 2024 season, #7 LaJoie currently stands at P29 in the overall standings and has accumulated only one top-five finish in 23 starts.
