Immediately after the second event of NASCAR's triple-header at the Pocono Raceway got wrapped, enraged Chandler Smith rushed to Sam Mayer's #1 Chevy for some heated exchange. Even though no contact occurred between the duo, the latter's hard racing didn't sit well with the #81 Toyota driver.
The Explore The Pocono Mountains 225 marked the 19th Xfinity Series race weekend on the 2024 calendar and witnessed defending champion Cole Custer sealing his maiden win of the season. After exercising dominance in the second and final stage, the Stewart-Haas Racing driver collected 59 points from his outing.
For Chandler Smith, however, the 90-lap debacle ended on a sad note. Despite kicking off his run from fifth place on the grid, the Joe Gibbs Racing driver succumbed to a 15th-place finish. While Smith didn't encounter any run-ins that could've slashed his race pace, he faced a tough challenge from Sam Mayer at Turn 2.
Not once, not twice, but the #1 Chevy driver troubled the #81 Toyota three times while maneuvering through the tunnel turn and almost colliding into the latter. Enraged by the way of Mayer's racing, Smith rushed to the former's car before he could even jump out and the duo threw expletive words at the other.

"He ain’t gonna mess with me anymore"- Chandler Smith confident of no more misery after schooling Sam Mayer
Chandler Smith is running his sophomore full-time Xfinity Series season. With two wins, seven top-5s, and 11 top-10s, the JGR driver is currently in a career-best third place in the regular season standings while being second in the Playoff Picture.
Starting fifth, Smith could've posted another promising result but Sam Mayer's repeated hard racing at the tunnel turn hindered the former's pursuit to some extent. Responding to the #81 Toyota driver's post-race exchange, Mayer was caught off guard as he didn't expect Chandler Smith, of all the drivers to have a problem with his Pocono antics.
"He can’t handle being raced hard, I guess; I don’t know,” Mayer told NASCAR.com. “I mean, that was the last person I expected to be upset with me today.
But after the heated altercation, Smith is confident that a similar incident won't happen again and throws a warning jibe at Mayer.
"I mean he sat on my door in the ‘Tunnel Turn’ three times — about wrecked all three times. And then he wrecked the 97 [Shane van Gisbergen]. He ain’t gonna mess with me anymore; I can promise you that. And if he does, I guarantee he won’t do it again. Hopefully he got the message," Smith said via NASCAR.
Both drivers will be seen in the Playoffs as well and it will be intriguing to see if Sam Mayer races hard again despite Chandler Smith's admittance that it won't happen again.
