JR Motorsports veteran Justin Allgaier was involved in a dramatic collision with Alon Day during the NASCAR Xfinity Series practice race in Chicago. The peculiar incident took place early on in the practice session, and both drivers were taken to the infield care center shortly after.
Allgaier continues to go strong in his ninth season with Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s team. The last season's runner-up has already locked in a playoff spot yet again as he eyes his maiden Xfinity title.
However, Allgaier's weekend in Chicago took an unexpected turn for the worse. Roughly 15 minutes into the practice session for the NASCAR Xfinity Series, The Loop 110, Allgaier’s car crashed into the tire barrier and wall in Turn 4.
The situation escalated as Allgaier’s car came to a halt against the wall. Alon Day, driving the No. 45 Chevrolet Camaro for Alpha Prime Racing, didn't notice Allgaier’s stationary vehicle and collided with the rear of the NASCAR veteran's car at high speed. The impact severely damaged both vehicles, destroying the rear of Allgaier’s car and ripping apart the driver's side bodywork and door foam on Day’s car.
Despite the severity of the crash, Allgaier managed to drive his car back to the pit lane, while Day's car had to be towed away due to its extensive damage. Both drivers were promptly taken to the infield care center, but were released shortly after with no major injuries reported.
Alon Day shares his perspective on crash with Justin Allgaier
Day expressed his frustration and disappointment following the incident. Reflecting on the crash, Day said (via TobyChristie):
"From my side, I couldn’t hear anything. I came in really, really hot. What can I say? I’m really disappointed in myself, for my Alpha Prime team and JSSI as a sponsor."
"Yeah, that was a quick, very quick weekend. What can I say? I wish that I could know that Justin was there. I also followed [Ryan Sieg], we went really quick into the corner, and then saw everyone braking and then the car showed up in the middle," he added.
The crash was particularly tough for Day, as his No. 45 team doesn’t have a backup car available. Consequently, he will not be competing in Saturday’s race, reducing the field to 37 cars.
Meanwhile, Allgaier will continue with his race weekend in Chicago. At the time of writing, the 38-year-old driver is ranked third in the NASCAR Xfinity Series standings. He has 584 points to his name, courtesy of one win and five top-5 finishes so far.
