Kyle Busch spun out of the lead after trying to lap Chase Briscoe on turn two at Kansas Speedway. With 32 laps to go, Busch was passing Briscoe from the outside when he lost control of his car before sliding down to the apron.
Busch is a NASCAR Cup Series veteran driver who pilots the No. 8 Chevrolet Camaro at Richard Childress Racing. He holds the record for the most consecutive seasons with a win at 19. However, the incident with Briscoe ended his chance of extending the record to 20 at the Hollywood Casino 400.
Looking at the incident, Kyle Busch and Chase Briscoe didn’t make contact. However, the No. 8 car was running in dirty air from the No. 14 Ford Mustang, which resulted in Busch getting loose before hitting the wall and spinning out the lead.
Kyle Busch rejoined the field after losing control of his car. No. 8 crew chief crew Randall Burnett, asked what Busch needed for the next run. The 39-year-old driver responded by saying it would be the same length as the past run.
“Doesn’t matter in dirty air […] I don’t know what to tell ya,”
After leading the Kansas race, the 63-time Cup winner crossed the checkered flag in 19th and earned 22 points for his efforts. He led the field for 26 laps before the incident with Chase Briscoe, who finished 24th after starting from 9th.
The Las Vegas native reflected on the incident with the No. 14 after the race, saying:
“Just running 10/10ths all the time, trying to make up and make up speed and covered the 1 car [Ross Chastain] make sure I can stay ahead of him and the 14 turned down the hill in order to get clean air from the guy in front of him and so I want to his outside and plugged a hole and I just air… just some reason just felt nothing off the corner.”
Busch expressed his disappointment and said his team deserved the win.
“Hate it for my guys and everybody at RCR and ECR. They deserve to get the win today. I mean we hung underneath the 1 car there for 15 laps trying to pass him and finally passed him. Could get away from him a little bit, catch a lap car, we back up a little bit, you know, the gap just kind of get doing that and I guess I just got into a bigger hurry.”
Kyle Busch still has six races left to get his first win in the season, with Talladega Superspeedway next on the calendar.
