Kyle Busch wrecked out with 40 laps to go at Pocono Raceway. The contact was seemingly initiated by Corey Lajoie, which turned into a multi-car crash.
On the restart of The Great American Getaway 400's final stage, a large part of the NASCAR grid wrecked as Lajoie made contact with Busch. The #7 Chevrolet bumped into the back of the #8 Chevy, which slid him way out of the track. However, he slid back up to the track and had a direct impact with Ryan Preece, ending his race.
Other drivers affected in the incident were AJ Allmendinger, Harrison Burton, Carson Hocevar, and Ricky Stenhouse Jr. Here's a video released by NASCAR shortly after the incident:
Here is an on-board clip from the #7 Chevy driven by Corey Lajoie:
Although Kyle Busch did not start the race in a very good position, it was crucial for him to finish as his playoff chances are diminishing. With only 5 rounds remaining after the action at Pocono, drivers bordering the top-16 line are looking for strong finishes to solidify their positions.
Kyle Busch's playoff chances diminish further after Pocono crash
It was seemingly apparent that the #8 Chevy was not in a position to continue further in the race. Even though this is only one race, Busch, who is having a lot of difficulty making the playoffs, may find this to be a huge letdown.
The 39-year-old Busch is currently going through the worst season of his career, spanning over two decades. Other than six top-10 finishes, Busch has remained out of contention in most races, with five DNFs, including Pocono. He has qualified for the playoffs every single season since 2006, but currently, it is hard to say if he will manage to make it through.
Currently, Busch stands in 19th place in the playoff standings, 98 points behind Christ Buescher in 16th. Although there are still five races remaining for him to try and fill the gap, it is hard to estimate if he would be able to do so, given his performances this season.
As he previously revealed to Bob Pockrass of FOX Sports, he has apparently been having problems with his Chevrolet.
"There was something wrong with the bearing down at the bottom of the firewall so they(RCR) got it straightened up," he said.
"Steering felt normal and [the rest of the car feel] not very good," he added.
