Kyle Larson's Arrow McLaren teammate Pato O'Ward could not contain his emotions after the checkered flag at the Indy 500. While Larson finished 18th, O'Ward finished the race as the runner-up, narrowly losing out to Josef Newgarden, who successfully defended his title in Indianapolis.

Newgarden edged out O'Ward in the last two corners of the race. While the 33-year-old celebrated his win with the crowd, O'Ward was very disappointed, as shown in a video shared on X.

The Mexican can be seen trying to climb out of his racecar, before getting overcome by emotion. O'Ward's teammates consoled him, patting his back, as he lay with his head against the car. At this point, Arrow McLaren CEO Zak Brown rushed to the Mexican and embraced him.

Pato O'Ward and Kyle Larson both left heartbroken after Indy 500 and the Double

Pato O'Ward was disappointing after failing to win the Indy 500 despite coming agonizingly close. In a post-race interview with INDYCAR on NBC, O'Ward said that his feelings after the race were "hard to put into words."

"We recovered. We went back (in the order), we went forward, we went back. Some people were just driving like maniacs. We had so many near race-enders and were just so close again. So f**king close ... It's just heartbreaking. Two corners short," the Mexican said.

O'Ward further claimed he thought he did everything he could've done to win the race, that he got his car to do things it wasn't even capable of doing.

As for his emotional reaction after the race, O'Ward mentioned that he's somebody who wears his heart on his sleeve and that he can't hide anything.

"It's just when you've come so close and it just doesn't seem to -- you just can't seem to get it right, it's just a lot of emotion I would say," he added as per IndyCar.

But it wasn't just O'Ward who was overcome with emotions after the race. His McLaren teammate Kyle Larson also got emotional, albeit in a different way, as he posted a long note describing his thoughts on a Double attempt that simply didn't go well despite everything in place for it to go well.

"What I thought could be one of the best days of my life quickly turned into one of the most disappointing ones I’ve ever experienced," Larson wrote on his X handle.

Having said that, it's worth mentioning that both Kyle Larson and Pato O'Ward will get another attempt at the Indy 500 next year.

Larson is currently 29th in the 2024 IndyCar Series' driver standings, with 21 points to his name. O'Ward, on the other hand, has had an impressive season so far, as he stands at fourth, with 134 points to his name.
