Shane van Gisbergen will not be making a back-to-back appearance in Victory Lane at the Chicago Street Race. SVG's Cup Series race ended abruptly after making contact with Chase Briscoe's #14 Ford.

Shane van Gisbergen had won the first stage of the Grant Park 165. On the restart on lap 25, the first green flag lap of stage two, Chase Briscoe lost control of his Ford as the surface got soaked with rain. A spinning Briscoe made contact with van Gisbergen at turn 6 before crashing into the safety barriers, sending SVG slamming into the wall. This incident forced van Gisbergen off the track, leading to a DNF.

Here's a look at the incident below.

The Kauling Racing driver had won the Xfinity race in Chicago yesterday and was aiming for a double, hoping to make it a perfect weekend, just like Christopher Bell did in New Hampshire last month. Unfortunately, it wasn't meant to be. The red flag came out on the racetrack after the Briscoe-SVG incident to clean up some standing water around the course.

As Shane van Gisbergen was the first driver to retire, he will be credited with P40 for the Grant Park 165.

Shane van Gisbergen comments on the incident with Chase Briscoe

After making an early exit from the Chicago Street Race, three-time Supercars champion Shane van Gisbergen shared his views on the incident that transpired between him and Chase Briscoe, eventually putting him out of the race.

In an interview with NASCAR on NBC, van Gisbergen said:

"I don't know, I just sort of turned in, looked pretty good, and then just got smashed by the No. 14, it's gutting. We were in the lead for a lot of that race, felt good taking off in the rain, but that sucks. It's an unfortunate mistake by him(Briscoe), I'm sure he didn't mean it, but yeah when he just clipped me, there was just nothing I could do"

Furthermore, van Gisbergen was asked whether he was disappointed with the result or if it was just another racing incident, to which he responded:

"Of course, I'm disappointed, we had a really amazing Camaro there, and Kauling Racing Trackhouse, they gave us a great car and we were able to lead, and I felt like I was driving well within myself, so yeah it's a shame to be out so early, and a shame we couldn't have a proper crack at it in the end."

Shane van Gisbergen is in his first Xfinity Series season, as a full-time driver for Kaulig Racing, driving the #97 Chevrolet Camaro SS. van Gisbergen currently stands in P11 in the Xfinity Series driver standings securing 3 wins, four top-five finishes, and five top-ten finishes.
