Christopher Bell's crew chief, Adam Stevens, has revealed the #20 team's goal to advance for the Championship 4 race at Phoenix Raceway. Stevens outlined the current playoff standing of the top-ranked NASCAR Cup Series driver and mentioned under what situation neither of the rivals could pass the Joe Gibbs Racing driver in points.
Bell is currently placed third in the playoffs. Joey Logano and Tyler Reddick have punched their Phoneix ticket, courtesy of their Las Vegas Motor Speedway and Homestead-Miami Speedway wins, respectively. With that, only two spots remain for the Championship 4, with six drivers to fight for it.
Stevens outlined the 'astonishing' Martinsville fact that all six playoff drivers who haven't secured their place in the title race have won at the Martinsville Speedway. This includes Christopher Bell, William Byron, Kyle Larson, Denny Hamlin, Ryan Blaney, and Chase Elliott. Hence, the battle would be fierce as all drivers boast a race-winning experience at the 0.526-mile oval.
Bell's crew chief revealed that if his #20 Toyota salvages 34 points during the 35th race weekend, they can't be passed in points and would secure their Championship 4 race berth. Stevens elaborated on the same, saying (via SiriusXM NASCAR Radio).
"It's remarkable that the remaining cars that aren't locked in are all Martinsville winners. It's astonishing honestly. And we all have the capability of going up there and running well in the NextGen cars. So, it's gonna be a dogfight at the front for sure and I can't tell you who's gonna lead the most laps and who's gonna be there at the checkered flag, but I can tell you if we score 34 points, we cannot get passed in the points. So that's our goal going in is we have a point total we need to achieve," Christopher Bell's crew chief said.
Bell is the only JGR driver above the cutline, as his teammate Denny Hamlin is below the provisional divider in sixth place with an 18-point deficit.
A look at how Christopher Bell is at high odds of punching a Championship 4 ticket despite zero wins in the playoffs
Christopher Bell's regular season wrapped on a high note. The #20 Toyota driver parked his car in the victory lane three times, guaranteeing his spot in the Round of 16 that began at Atlanta Motor Speedway.
Since the playoff opener, Bell showcased dominant performance in all but the Watkins Glen International race, where he finished 14th, his worst playoff fate this year. The 29-year-old posted a P4 finish in Atlanta and a fifth-place result at Bristol Motor Speedway, securing his advancement into the Round of 12.
Bell was the polesitter in the Round of 12 opener at Kansas Speedway and rounded up a seventh-place finish. The next battle at Talladega Superspeedway witnessed the nine-time Cup Series race winner surge from a 21st-place start to settling in P6. The JGR driver got promoted into the Round of 8 by scoring a runner-up finish at the Charlotte Roval.
Christopher Bell registered his second consecutive P2 finish in the Round of 8 opener at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway and came in P4 at the recent Homestead-Miami Speedway race. Notably, of eight playoff races held so far, the JGR driver has recorded five top-5s and seven top-10s.
Thus, with 34 points required, a must-win situation is off the charts, and Bell is at high odds of punching his Championship 4 ticket.
