After the Cup race at Bristol, Kyle Larson penned down a long note on his social media platform, addressing the criticism from the fanbase against the recent race. He responded to fans calling the Bristol race, 'tire wear', and more.
Larson urged the fans to "tamper your expectations" and stated that it has always been tough to pass at Bristol. After this note, a fan called out the Hendrick Motorsports driver, claiming that he hadn't raced at the Bristol before 2008. But he gave it back to the fan, saying:
"And neither did you"
This little exchange between Larson and the fan was what the host of DJD reloaded brought up recently, wondering why he said what he said. Larson revealed:
"I think I said that because I’ve been a part of some not so exciting races where somebody might lead a lot of laps, not a lot of passing and then we get a caution at the end and we have one or two overtime finishes and then I look at the poll the next day and it’s like, ‘The best race of the year.’ That’s where I was coming at from Bristol, I could’ve led 450 laps and had two green white checkered finishes, I could’ve won or lost, it had nothing to do with me but we could’ve had two overtime finishes and the pole would’ve looked totally different."
Kyle Larson suggested that in such a scenario, which he mentioned in his comments, there would be different or even less conversation about tires and the Next Gen car.
He remarked that the current discourse in NASCAR is a tell-tale sign of where everyone is mentally.
"It’s just the mindset of all of us. We’re very short term memory. It’s easy for us to forget about things that happened an hour ago but what we see right in front of us can skew our decisions," Larson said.
Why did Kyle Larson decide to pen down the long note in the first place?
Kyle Larson, who is generally regarded as a quiet, relatively less expressive driver, posting a lengthy note on his own was something that he doesn't generally do. The note was a culmination of questions nobody has the answers to, be it NASCAR, the fans, or the insiders.
Larson claimed it's hard to point fingers at people, and that the talks of tire wear and rest at Bristol burns him out a little bit because of Bristol's history.
"There's only been one race where we've had tire wear in the last 10 or 11 years I've been going there," Larson said.
The #5 driver remarked that everyone is baffled, and that because there wasn't enough tire wear, they should've been 'more baffled'.
With that said, Kyle Larson came back to the point he made in his lengthy post, claiming that Bristol is Bristol, a racetrack which is fast pace with relatively less passing.
