Team Penske owner Roger Penske has defended Joey Logano’s 2024 NASCAR Cup Series championship, highlighting the team's dominant performance in the 2024 season. Logano’s boss also voiced his perspective on NASCAR’s points system and its inherent fairness.
Joey Logano’s 2024 NASCAR championship marked his third NASCAR career title and third consecutive title for Team Penske in the Next Gen era. NASCAR veteran achieved his third title through a dominant performance at the season-finale race at Phoenix Raceway.
Speaking to Bob Pockrass about the possibility of changes in the NASCAR points system, Roger Penske deferred the decision to NASCAR to see if further changes are necessary.
Addressing critics of the playoff format ahead of NASCAR Awards, Penske said:
“Well, I would say this, that we all signed up for a point system at the beginning of the year, didn't we? And that's what we operated on, and we've been around where there's been changes many different times, and I think we'll let NASCAR take that one on if they think they need changes, that'd be fine,”
Roger Penske is confident in the team’s ability to adapt and thrive in any NASCAR system. The legendary team owner pointed out that winning consistently—three championships in a row and 42% of the season's races—reflects their dominance to excel under the current points system.
In defense of Logano’s title, Penske said:
“I guess if someone said you win three in a row, they're going to change something, or Joey, remember, Logano, including the All-Star Race, had a tremendous season, and we won 42% of the races, the team did, including after the All-Star race to the end of the season, so people can say what they want about the system.”
“We have a winner in the Shell Pennzoil car, our driver, Logano, second place finisher was Blaney, so I guess we figured it out.”
Ryan Blaney wrapped up his title defense season with a runner-up finish at the season-finale race at Phoenix Raceway.
Roger Penske expresses joy after securing third NASCAR championship in Next Gen era
Team Penske is the only team to win a championship in the Next Gen era, as it was their third consecutive title when Logano took the checkered flag at Phoenix. The #22 Ford driver had won the previous Cup title in 2018 and 2022, while Ryan Blaney won last year.
Expressing his happiness on winning another title, Roger Penske said (via SiriusXM NASCAR Radio):
"It's amazing when you think about, you know, the Pettys and the Hendricks and people like that; just to get close to their club is amazing. But our team today and all season, we just got better and better. And as I said, my name's on the door, but it's, you know, all the people that make a difference."
