Jimmie Johnson recently spoke about his plans and hopes with Legacy Motor Club. Following his retirement from the sport as a full-time driver in 2020, Johnson returned to NASCAR in a new role, as a part-time driver and part-time owner in Legacy Motor Club.
The team, which was previously known as Richard Petty Motorsports and then Petty GMS Motorsports, was renamed to LMC after Johnson purchased ownership stakes in late 2022. Legacy ran with Chevrolet for its first season in 2023. The team then switched to Toyota for 2024 and beyond.
While recently speaking about his team, Johnson opened up on where he sees LMC in a few years in terms of success and the extent of its participation beyond NASCAR.
"We're highly focused on the NASCAR championship and very excited to have a partnership with Toyota and my goal and the team is called Legacy Motor Club, built a legacy behind the wheel, now it's time to build a legacy on the other side of it, on the ownership side, and Richard Petty's one of those founding members of our race team. My partner Maury Gallagher has been very successful as an entrepreneur in the business space in the States. And ultimately we want to dominate NASCAR. We want to be one of those teams, but in addition to that you know I think there are opportunities for us long term to compete in other championships," Johnson described. [1:05:30]
Jimmie Johnson also mentioned his love for IndyCar and other disciplines of car racing. Having said that, he said he doesn't know where the future would take LMC.
But despite that, Johnson said his eyes are open to the motorsports landscape as they'd love to build their portfolio.
Richard Petty expressed his concerns with Jimmie Johnson coming on board his team in 2023
In early 2023, even before Legacy Motor Club properly got underway in their first season, Richard Petty shared his thoughts about Jimmie Johnson and his arrival in the organization.
"It's been strange to me. Most of the time, I ran the majority of the show. Jimmie brought all his people in. His way of running things and my way of running things are probably a little bit different. We probably agree on about 50 percent of what it really comes down to," Petty said (via ESPN).
Addressing the subject of Johnson having more power, Petty admitted that it bothered him.
Sharing his side of the story, Johnson claimed he was 'disappointed' with Richard Petty expressing his concerns in public. The 7x Cup champion said that he was not spoken to by Petty about the things he wasn't feeling okay with.
"He's not expressed them to me, for starters,'' Johnson said.
Johnson added that even before he joined the organization, there were already 'business decisions' that had taken place between Petty and Gallagher. He mentioned that a lot of Petty's concerns were down to business decisions that he made prior to Johnson's involvement in the endeavor.
