Hendrick Motorsports ace Chase Elliott has spoken on NASCAR's future with electric vehicles. A potential electrification of the sport has been increasingly talked about in recent years.

NASCAR has been lately exploring the realm of electric vehicles since the completion of the original Next Gen Cup Series platform in 2021. The rise in the production and popularity of EVs has led to speculation about the future of the sport.

With environmental concerns and the increasing market share of electric vehicles, there is mounting pressure on NASCAR to consider electrification.

Chase Elliott, a former NASCAR Cup Series champion and a six-time winner of NASCAR's Most Popular Driver award, recently offered his two cents on the subject.

Speaking to journalist Kyle Dalton, Elliott acknowledged the significant changes he has witnessed during his time in the sport, particularly the transition to the Next Gen car.

"Since I’ve been here, it’s been the transition to the Next Gen car, for sure. I mean, and honestly, I’m not sure there’s ever been a change that is quite that large or a change that has been that much of a departure from a previous generation vehicle," he said.

When asked about his opinions on EVs' scope in NASCAR, Chase Elliott added:

"I'm not sure where they want to go. Obviously, there’s a lot of talk of what the electric side of the world is going to bring. That’s the most popular question, right?"

NASCAR could be open to any and every possibility, says Chase Elliott

Chase Elliott suggested that the sport is no stranger to significant technological advancements. The Hendrick Motorsports driver believes that NASCAR is open to exploring various possibilities as it looks to the future.

"I know that NASCAR, they’re always trying to think ahead at least and understand. They try to be prepared for whatever that next step is. I really think anything is on the table as time goes on," he said in the same interaction.

However, Chase Elliott also highlighted the importance of ensuring that teams are adequately prepared for any significant changes, both financially and in terms of development time, adding:

"And I think from a competitor standpoint and just being involved with these teams, I just hope that they give the teams a good opportunity to not only financially be able to take on big changes as they come along in a fair manner, but also timely, too, and just giving people enough time to develop and get things where they need to be."

Earlier this season, NASCAR demonstrated its interest in electric vehicles by showcasing a compact utility vehicle during the Busch Light Clash race day. However, at the time of writing, there are reportedly no plans of racing an EV or kick off an EV-exclusive series in the sport.
