The scary incident took place on Lap 29 of the 30-lap event when Sussex’s car caught fire and burst into flames, which proceeded to intensify around the car from an apparent fuel leak.
Stevie Sussex ran out of the car and was engulfed in flames. However, the safety crew quickly extinguished the fire before Sussex got up and was immediately taken in an ambulance to the infield care center and transported to a nearby hospital. He spent the whole night in the burn unit before being discharged on Saturday (July 27).
Sussex is an experienced sprint car driver known for his competitive spirit and numerous victories in the sprint car racing circuit. He's on a recovery period, as per the update from his wife, Myrka Sussex, and the road to recovery is expected to be long.

“Being released now. Last night was probably the worst with pain and the clean up was intense. He was in the burn unit on his own till this morning. Will meet with the doctor first thing this week to see what course of action we gotta take. I’ll start with the happy pictures. He did want me to share an update and a few pictures.
“He was VERY lucky after seeing this again and again of how bad he was completely engulfed in flames. He will need to keep up with physical therapy and no surgeries at this time.”
