NASCAR drivers Chase Elliott, Denny Hamlin, Bubba Wallace, Chase Briscoe, and a few others had shared their memorable career moments in the sport in February 2024. While Elliott picked his championship-winning moment in 2020, others went for their first race win, or in one case, Jimmie Johnson's seventh championship!
Chat.us.up on Instagram had approached multiple drivers at the Daytona International Speedway in February 2024 to speak about their favorite memory of driving in NASCAR. The interviewer started with Hamlin, who stated that his first win at Richmond back in 2009 was his favorite.
Following Hamlin, Elliott appeared in the video and said,
"Winning the championship, at the end of 2020."
Erik Jones revealed that his favorite racing memory was his snowman derby victory in 2012. For Chase Briscoe, it was the camaraderie between a group of guys "kind of with the same goal" (of winning the championship).
Bubba Wallace had an interesting take. The 23XI driver shared that traveling and going around the country to check off "a lot of cool things", try new food, and meet new people was his favorite.
Ty Dillon revealed that winning the Indianapolis in 2014 (Lily Diabetes 250) in the Xfinity Series was his favorite moment in NASCAR. Hendrick Motorsports driver William Byron stated that witnessing Jimmie Johnson's seventh NASCAR championship was "pretty awesome."
Initially doubtful, but Daniel Suarez also picked his favorite moment in NASCAR. The Mexican driver revealed that his first race win at Columbus, Ohio, in 2013 was his most cherished memory. Interestingly, Suarez can have a new one now as he was victorious at the Atlanta Motor Speedway in the Quaker State 400 this season.
What did the Championship win mean for Chase Elliott in 2020?
Chase Elliott fended off challenges from Denny Hamlin, Brad Keselowski, and Joey Logano to win his first NASCAR Cup Series Championship back in 2020. With this, he became the third youngest NASCAR driver to have the feat after Jeff Gordon and Bill Rexford.
"I’m not sure that I still even know,” Elliott said when asked what the championship meant to him. “I just, man, I’m at a loss for words. This is unbelievable. Oh, my gosh. We did it. I mean, we did it. That’s all I’ve got to tell you. Unreal."
With the championship win, Elliott became the fourth driver to bring home a driver's championship to Hendrick Motorsports. Jimmie Johnson, Jeff Gordon, and Terry Labonte were the previous winners of the HMS.
Following his victory, Elliott went back to the small town of Dawsonville, Georgia, where he celebrated his NASCAR triumph in a unique manner.
