Even though the 2024 NASCAR Cup Series has ended, racing is still going on for two former NASCAR champions, Kyle Larson and Kyle Busch. Both the drivers took part in Wednesday’s USAC NOS Energy Drink Midget National Championship at Bakersfield Speedway.
Hendrick Motorsports star driver Kyle Larson started 18th and ended up finishing P23 in the 24-driver field. He has won this event in 2019. Kyle Busch, who is making his USAC Midget debut, came one position short of a transfer spot for the 30-lap feature and couldn’t compete in the main event.
Busch was unfortunate in the second heat race, as his #51B midget lost power while leading his first laps on his USAC racing debut and pushed back to the pits. He finished eighth in the Heat 2.
Larson is coming off with a USAC Midget win at Merced Speedway this past weekend. It was his first win of the 2024 season and the 29th of his USAC Midget career.
Meanwhile, Tanner Thorson won the USAC NOS Energy Drink Midget National feature at Bakersfield’s 1/3-mile dirt oval. He dominated the race, leading all 30 laps from the pole and crossing the finish line by an impressive margin of 3.082 seconds, ahead of Ryan Timms. With the win, he became the 18th different Toyota-powered driver to win a national midget feature this season.
Meanwhile, Ryan Timms finished runner-up, followed by Cannon McIntosh, Gavin Miller, and Zach Daum in the top five. Justin Grant, Jacob Denney, Cade Lewis, Logan Seavey, and Kale Drake completed the top 10.
