Team Penske driver Ryan Blaney is in pursuit of his second NASCAR Cup Series championship victory after claiming the title for the first time in 2023. He has been in great form so far in the season with two victories and multiple top 5 and top 10 finishes.
Born in Trumbull County, Ohio, Blaney made his full-time Cup Series debut in 2015 with Wood Brothers and moved to Penske in 2018. Since then, he has been no stranger to the playoffs. He remains one of the most competitive drivers on the field. This has been the case since early in his career during the junior series as well.
Blaney was promising from a young age. Son of former NASCAR driver Dave Blaney, Ryan raced in quarter midget racing and won his first race when he was just nine, moving to Legends Car three years later and also debuting in late model racing around the same time.
At the age of 16, Ryan Blaney took part in the South Super Late Odel Series, sanctioned by the Pro All Stars Series (PASS). He continued to race in the series, finishing up as the runner-up twice in the championship.
His first major association with NASCAR came up in 2011 when he debuted in the ARCA Racing Series. He took part in two races and also one in the West series at Phoenix, which he won.
Exploring Ryan Blaney's journey to the Cup Series
In 2012, Ryan Blaney debuted in the Xfinity Series, then called the Nationwide Series, with Tommy Baldwin Racing. He raced in six races for the team and another seven for Penske. In the 13 races, he managed to bring seven top-10 finishes, with a P2 in Texas. He never raced in the series full-time but has taken part in multiple races every year since his debut.
For another two years in 2013 and 2014, Blaney raced in the Truck Series (debuting in 2012) for Brad Keselowski Racing. He won three races in three years and finished the championship in second place (by points) in 2014.
Around this time, Team Penske gave him the first taste of the Cup Series. He took part in two races of the series in 2014 at Kansas and Talladega, but the results were not fruitful.
The following year, Wood Brothers Racing gave him limited exposure to the series in a part-time role, ultimately giving him a full-time seat in 2016. He piloted the #21 Ford.
Since then, Ryan Blaney has been a part of the series. He moved to Penske in 2018 and won his first Cup Series Championship last season in 2023.
