The NASCAR community has been divided over Austin Dillon's controversial finish at Richmond Raceway on Sunday, August 11. In the latest episode of the Door Bumper Clear podcast, Bubba Wallace's spotter Freddie Kraft slammed NASCAR while hoping for a positive verdict, due Tuesday.
NASCAR hit the Virginian racetrack track after a two-week break due to the Paris Olympics, and a few hours later, became the egg of arguably the biggest controversy in the sport at the moment. Richard Childress Racing driver Dillon wrecked Team Penske's Joey Logano and Joe Gibbs Racing icon Denny Hamlin to win the Cook Out 400.
"This is one of the most egregious things I've seen in a long time," Kraft said. "I said last night on the radio because all of a sudden, they said the finish is under review. I go, well, if they're ever gonna do something, this would be the night that they would do it."
During a post-race interview, Elton Sawyer, the senior vice president of competition at NASCAR, said the last lap was "awful close to the line" (via NBC Sports). Sawyer added that the concerned officials would review the same and come up with a decision on Tuesday.
However, Kraft said regardless of the outcome, Sawyer would be criticized by the NASCAR aficionados.
"Poor Elton. They say Elton's coming out to make a statement. I'm like, 'Whatever he says, he's getting torn up,'" Kraft said.
Brad Keselowski's spotter TJ Majors, who is also a host of the podcast, said of the impending decision:
"I mean, it's right on the line."
"What do you mean it's right on the line...where is the line?" roared Kraft. "What's worse than that? What, you're gonna shoot somebody?"
Many in the NASCAR world believe that although Dillon could be penalized, he would not be stripped of the win.
NASCAR insiders split up as Austin Dillon's victory hangs on the line
In a recent episode of The Teardown podcast, Jeff Gluck of The Athletic shared his views on whether Austin Dillon's actions would incur a penalty and his win would be docked.
"There was no penalty; there was no rough driving penalty, therefore he keeps the win," Gluck said (via On3). "No matter what happens going forward, I think if I’m not mistaken, Austin Dillon will keep the win. They could come out on Tuesday and have some sort of a penalty, but the win is not in question."
However, the podcast's co-host Jordan Bianchi, a renowned journalist for The Athletic, felt otherwise. Although unlikely, Bianchi did not rule out NASCAR confiscating Dillon's victory. If that happens, Denny Hamlin, who finished P2, would probably be named the winner.
"Elton (Sawyer) said they were going to look at it. My interpretation is that they wouldn't take away the win, that’s not customarily what they would do. But I wouldn't completely rule it out. I would be surprised," Bianchi said.
Getting stripped of the win would surely be a big blow to Richard Childress Racing. After all, it was the team's first win of the season in the Cup Series and also their first at Richmond since 2013. Furthermore, it was Dillon's first win in over two years.
