The 2024 NASCAR Cup Series returns following a two-week Olympic break at the Richmond Raceway for the Cook Out 400. Excitement is high, as the track is similar to an intermediate track but races like a short track.
The Richmond Raceway is located in Henrico County, Virginia. The 0.75-mile oval track features 14 degrees of banking in turns 1-4, eight degrees on the frontstretch and two degrees on the backstretch.
It hosted its first NASCAR Cup Series race in 1953, where Lee Petty emerged victorious driving the #42 Dodge for Petty Enterprises.
Since the inaugural race, some of the biggest stars and teams have reached victory lane at least once at Richmond Raceway. A total of 54 different NASCAR drivers have taken the checkered flag in 136 Cup races in Virginia.
With 13 victories, NASCAR Hall of Famer Richard Petty is the most successful driver at the Richmond Raceway in Cup Series history. Petty took his first checkered flag on this track in 1961, while his last win came in 1975.
Among active Cup drivers, Kyle Busch holds the lead with six victories at Richmond. While Denny Hamlin is the next two closest active drivers with five wins each.
Joe Gibbs Racing’s 19 Cup wins at Richmond are the most among all teams. They came in 1999, 2009–2010, 2015–2016, 2018–2019, 2021, 2001–2002, 2009–2012, 2016, 2018–2019, 2022 and 2024. Meanwhile, Petty Enterprises has won 15 times.
