In 2010, Bubba Wallace became the youngest and the first African-American driver to win a NASCAR K&N Pro East Series race at Greenville’s-Pickens Speedway. Some might argue it was a beatable record. However, he made another historical record on October 26, 2012, at the Martinsville Speedway, which, to this day, is unbeatable and will forever remain so. Wallace won the Camping World Truck Series Kroger 200 and became the first Black driver to win a race in the series.
Per reports, Wallace led 96 laps in his No. 54 Kyle Busch Motorsports truck that day. The following year, the Alabama native delivered his second victory in the Truck Series event at Martinsville Speedway.
Today, Wallace is a regular face in the Cup Series, the highest tier of NASCAR. The 31-year-old drives the No. 23 Toyota Camry full-time for 23XI Racing, a two-car Cup team that fields the reigning regular-season champion and last week’s winner, Tyler Reddick.
Wallace signed a multi-year contract extension with 23XI Racing in September 2024. With that said, the #23 team is expected to experience a major shakeup in its roster for the upcoming season. Charles Denike, who currently serves as the crew chief for the No. 19 truck for McAnally–Hilgemann Racing, will replace Wallace’s longtime crew chief, Bootie Barker.
Founded in 2020, 23XI Racing is jointly owned by Joe Gibbs Racing driver, Denny Hamlin and retired NBA superstar, Michael Jordan. The team recently opened the doors to their brand new headquarters, a 114,000 square foot, state-of-the-art building named "Airspeed", located in Huntersville, North Carolina.
In 2021, Wallace won his first career Cup Series race at Talladega, also the first victory for his newly-formed team. With that, he became the second Black driver to win a Cup Series race, after pioneer Wendell Scott.
Bubba Wallace’s car to highlight NASCAR Xfinity reward members at Martinsville
Bubba Wallace will flaunt the Xfinity colors at Martinsville on November 3. The 500-lap race called the Xfinity 500 will mark the return of the “selfie” paint scheme for the second year in a row.
Last year, there were 65 faces all over Wallace’s car, all of who were the winners of the Xfinity rewards sweepstakes. However, this year, the number will go up to a whopping 231.
Recalling his P11 finish from last year, Wallace said (via Frontstretch),
“It’s cool. We had some speed in the spring race. I’m looking forward to getting back to Martinsville. I’ve had some success there throughout the years. It’s cool for Xfinity. They’ve done a lot for our sport and are coming on and being part of our team now. We’re doing cool, innovative ways to keep the customers attached because at the end of the day, we’re trying to help out the customers and help Xfinity grow the business.”
“I’m sure it’s cool for the customers that signed up to have their face on a racecar. For me to give them some sort of ride of a lifetime, indirectly,” Bubba Wallace added.
Fans can watch the race live on NBC from 2 pm ET onwards. Radio updates will be available on MRN and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio. Following the event at the half-mile paperclip, NASCAR will start gearing up for the coveted championship finale at Phoenix Raceway on November 10.
