Driving the #8 Chevrolet for JR Motorsports, Sammy Smith secured his first win of the 2024 season and advanced to the next round of playoffs with the win at Talladega. He emerged victorious with a late-race pass at NASCAR’s biggest oval on the calendar.

Smith, who came into the race ranked last among the 12 playoff drivers in championship standings, led the final lap only in a 98-lap event, but it was enough to win the United Rentals 250 overtime thriller. He crossed the finish line with an impressive margin of 0.177 seconds ahead of RSS Racing’s Ryan Sieg to grab the checkered flag. The win marked Smith’s second of his NASCAR Xfinity Series career.

Meanwhile, Ryan Sieg finished runner-up, followed by Riley Herbst, Sheldon Creed, and Chandler Smith in the top five. Jesse Love, Jeb Burton, David Starr, Brennan Poole, and Kyle Sieg completed the top 10.

JR Motorsports driver Sam Mayer crossed the finish line 16th, but his #1 Chevrolet failed the post-race height requirement, measuring too low in the rear after the regular post-race inspection. As a result, Mayer was disqualified from the event, dropping him to a 38th-place finish.
