It was announced last week that four-time Indianapolis 500 winner Hélio Castroneves would attempt to make the 2025 Daytona 500 behind the wheel for Trackhouse Racing. However, after NASCAR implemented new rules in the following days, the longtime NTT IndyCar Series veteran now has a guaranteed spot in the field.
So, what was the rule that clinched Castroneves a position in the Daytona 500 field next month? A few days ago, NASCAR announced an overhaul of new rules for the 2025 season, which includes an "open exemption provisional" for a driver who's a "significant contributor" from another form of motorsports.
Therefore, even if one of those drivers who fit that description are driving for an unchartered team, they can utilize the open exemption provisional to guarantee themselves a spot in the field. Per motorsports insider Jeff Gluck, Castroneves fits the requirements, and is therefore in the Daytona 500 without having to attempt to qualify his way in. Amid a thread of X posts detailing the new rules, Gluck wrote:
"Oh man. Here's a doozy: There's now something called an "open exemption provisional." A well-known driver who is a "significant contributor" from another series (NASCAR drivers not eligible) now automatically will make a Cup race. So...Hélio Castroneves is IN THE DAYTONA 500 already."
Furthermore, Gluck explained that the open exemption provisional won't act as a past champion's provisional, but rather if necessary, NASCAR will make an additional 41st starting position in the field for that driver. Gluck wrote:
"FOLKS -- there's more -- this wouldn't just be a provisional like a past champion's provisional where it's a spot in the 40-car field. IT IS AN EXTRA SPOT. A 41st car! "A 41st starting position may be added if a team utilizes an Open Exemption Provisional as long as the team has requested, and NASCAR has approved, the Open Exemption Provisional."
When did Trackhouse Racing announce Hélio Castroneves would attempt the Daytona 500?
Trackhouse Racing dropped a bombshell last Monday (January 6) when it announced that NTT IndyCar Series star Hélio Castroneves would attempt to race the 2025 Daytona 500. Castroneves will pilot the #91 Chevrolet, better known to the team as "Project 91."
NASCAR penned a message via Instagram that broke the news regarding Castroneves' Daytona 500 intentions.
"NEWS: Spider-Man is taking on The Great American Race! Team Trackhouse announces Hélio Castroneves will attempt to qualify for the Daytona 500 in the No. 91. #NASCAR"
Initially, it was thought that Castroneves would have to qualify his way into the race. However, he is now guaranteed a spot courtesy of the new open exemption provisional.
Castroneves is a four-time Indianapolis 500 winner, having won the prestigious event in 2001, 2002, 2009, and 2021. Castroneves is a 31-time race winner in the IndyCar Series.
