William Byron, the #24 Chevy driver for Hendrick Motorsports, is having a hard time since his top-five finish at the Pocono Raceway. NASCAR Cup Series veteran driver Kevin Harvick, discussing the #24 driver's results, expressed concern about his performances since his crown jewel race.
In a recent episode of his podcast Happy Hour, Harvick and his co-hosts Kaitlyn Vincie and Mamba Smith analyzed William Byron's performances at Indianapolis, Darlington, Daytona, and Watkins Glen. At the Indianapolis, the #24 Chevy driver got involved in an accident during the 75th lap as Ryan Preece contacted William Byron and sent him to the guarding walls.
A similar fate followed the Hendrick Motorsports driver at the Daytona. In the 160th lap, Josh Berry's car flipped upside down, and William Byron got involved in the crash. The collision at Darlington was the #24 driver's third accident in his last 5 races when he became involved in a multi-car wreck in the 344th lap.
While the #24 driver faced challenges, his teammates had a good run, Kyle Larson won at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, followed by Chase Elliot in the top 10 in tenth place. At the Daytona International Speedway, Chase Elliott also got involved in a crash like Byron. However, Alex Bowman finished in 16th and Kyle Larson in 21st place.
Even at Watkins Glen, the odds were not in favor of the Chevy driver; he got involved in an accident. William Byron got his first DNF at Dover Motor Speedway and then at Indianapolis. Since then, Byron has had two more DNFs in six more races. Harvick commented on this and said during an episode of Kevin Harvick's Happy Hour (on YouTube):
"William Byron has been a little bit off since Indianapolis, and his record at Indianapolis and the things that have gone on since then haven't been great," Harvick said [16:30].
William Byron and Brad Keselowski involved in a wreck at Watkins Glen
Watkins Glen had a wreck-filled ending last Sunday, with many drivers including Byron involved. In the final stage during the 81st lap, a caution was raised for the top 10 to stay out, including Byron, Elliot, Bowman, and others, and the race restarted in the 84th lap.
After the restart during the 84th lap, things suddenly went south when Brad Keselowski entered turn 4 with Joey Logano and tried to take the lead, but Logano maintained his lead, sending him in Byron. As soon as the #6 driver hit the Chevy driver, Keselowski sent Byron almost over the guarding rails.
In the 86th lap, Byron went into the pits to repair his car, which cost him two laps. He managed to finish 90 laps out of 92 at the Glens before finishing at 34th place. Speaking during the same podcast, Mamba Smith commented on the incident and said:
"William Byron, man, like they came into this season they wanted to win a lot of races and be a dominant force started right where they wanted to be and um, it just hasn't it just hasn't stayed with them and you know these are when you hit the wall, it hurts," Mamba Smith said[17:11]
The #24 Chevy driver is in the playoffs with a buffer of 25 points in tenth place. The upcoming Bristol race could be another chance for him to earn some playoff points.
