NASCAR driver Joey Logano recently shed light on his race strategy following his win in the South Point 400 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Logano's team made the call to stay out during the final half of stage three and maintained his track position until the end of the race.
Two-time Cup Series champion Joey Logano competes full-time for Team Penske in the Cup Series. In his NASCAR career, the Connecticut native has secured 67 race wins, with his most recent victory coming in the playoff race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, where he secured a spot in the championship 4.
Logano started the South Point 400 from P10. The former champion secured a few stage points before making a risky call to stay out as nearly the whole field went to pit road. In a recent episode of Kevin Harvick's Happy Hour podcast, Logano commented on the fuel efficiency masterclass at Las Vegas, which helped him secure his second playoff win.
"We were in a good position there and we had an advantage with the fuel mileage and we were able to take advantage of that. You're right, we were probably anywhere from a 5th to 10th-place car, just depending on where you picked us up and put us down. But our long run speed was really really good, one of the best cars on the long haul," Logano said [03:07].
"When you have a long run like that and fuel mileage is your advantage, it puts you in a different category where you're able to execute the race better or different than everybody else. You've got to use that when you can.You don't get that opportunity all the time and seems like this year we've taken advantage of the fuel mileage stuff a couple of times already," he added [03:27]
Joey Logano, who initially missed securing a spot in the Round of 8, got bumped up after Alex Bowman’s disqualification at the Charlotte ROVAL. With two weeks to prepare, Logano, who holds the record for the most appearances(6) in the Championship 4, is now eyeing his third championship title in the 2024 season.
Kyle Larson’s crew chief hails Joey Logano after nailing fuel mileage gamble in Las Vegas
Following Joey Logano's win in the Round of 8 opener at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Hendrick Motorsports ace driver Kyle Larson's crew chief commended the #22 Team for the incredible risk they took to secure a win for the former champion.
Cliff Daniels, crew chief of the #5 team, spoke with Fronststretch after the end of the South Point 400, where he reflected on Logano's race-winning performance:
"I think a lot of the field knew they were going to be close right there. I never doubt Joey Logano and Paul Wolfe when it comes to fuel mileage races; they're so good at it and obviously, they made it work today." Daniels said
Meanwhile, Kyle Larson finished the race in P11 and is currently 35 points above the Championship 4 cut-off line.
