Veteran NASCAR journalist Jeff Gluck recently appeared on a Dirty Mo Media podcast, recalling Carson Hocevar's recent antics during Sunday's Ally 400 at Nashville Speedway. The Spire Motorsports driver spun out fellow driver, Harrison Burton, during a final stage caution.
Gluck observed that wrecking fellow racers is nothing new for Carson Hocevar. One such instance from last year was when Hocevar attempted to wreck TRICON Garage speedster Taylor Gray during an April race at Martinsville Speedway.
Furthermore, in the 2023 NASCAR Xfinity Series championship race, Hocevar nudged Corey Heim's #11 truck and ended the latter's shot at the championship title. Although Heim retaliated by shoving Hocevar, the former had to settle for a disappointing 18th-place finish.
Gluck opined that wrecking his fellow competitors, apologizing to them, and doing it all over again has become a pattern with the 21-year-old stock car driver. Reflecting on the same, he said:
"This is sort of a pattern with Hocevar; that's part of the issue. He's sort of gone on this apology tour before (where) he's changing his way and then stuff will keep happening."
Gluck added:
"If he wants to be liked and have a great reputation and have sponsors...I mean, you just can't keep doing this stuff."
Here is a video of the crash between Hocevar and Burton:
NASCAR did not take any action against Hocevar during the race. However, after watching the replay, the officials docked the driver 25 points and handed him a $50,000 fine on Tuesday afternoon, as reported by FOX Sports journalist, Bob Pockrass.
As a result of the 25-point penalty, Carson Hocevar dropped from 22nd to 24th in the NASCAR Cup Series standings, with 318 points to his name.
20 races in the season, Hocevar has recorded a pair of top-10s. His next race is on July 7, at the Chicago Road Course, Illinois.
"Repeat offender"- Denny Hamlin calls out Carson Hocevar
In the latest episode of Actions Detrimental, Joe Gibbs Racing sensation Denny Hamlin expressed his views on the Hocevar-Burton incident. Calling Carson Hocevar a "repeat offender", the veteran racer said:
"I’m gonna call on NASCAR here, they need to do something to Carson. They don’t need to suspend him or anything like that, but they need to dig into his pocket a little bit because I think you have to.”
Carson Hocevar's racing prowess could easily slate him as the 2024 NASCAR Cup Series Rookie of the Year. However, the point penalty for the number 77 team relegated Hocevar 50 points behind Josh Berry, who is also in his rookie Cup Series season like Hocevar.
"I think $50,000 to Carson Hocevar probably gets his attention. (It) essentially sort of takes him out of Rookie of the Year contention," Jeff Gluck said in the previous interview.
Hocevar finished the race 16th, while Harrison Burton managed to finish 28th. He will need to win a race to qualify for his first playoffs in the Cup Series. As of today, Hocevar is 181 points behind the provisional cut line.
