Long-time NASCAR commentator Doug Rice recently announced his retirement, marking the end of an illustrious career as one of the sport's most notable voices. Upon sharing his final moments as a commentator on social media, NASCAR fans expressed their gratitude and emotions, reflecting on his decades of impactful commentary.
Rice has had a front-row seat in NASCAR as the lead announcer for PRN since 1988. He made his play-by-play debut in the 1993 Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway and had the honor to commentate on the triumphs of legends like Dale Earnhardt, Jeff Gordon, and Jimmie Johnson. Moreover, he is the only radio broadcaster to call the Indy Double, creating history in motorsports.
As Rice called on the last moments of the South Point 400 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, PRN Live shared a video of him in action in the commentator's box. Several fans shared their feelings about his retirement after such a celebrated career on X.
"For the final time of his 36-year broadcasting career, @Riceman61 calls the final lap of the #SouthPoint400." the post was captioned.

Doug Rice's last race as a play-by-play commentator, yesterday's South Point 400 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, was not short on drama. Besides 23XI Racing's Tyler Reddick's car flip, Team Penske's Joey Logano drove down victory lane after advancing to the playoffs due to Alex Bowman's elimination at the Charlotte ROVAL.
"We're going to the championship 4": Joey Logano comments on Las Vegas triumph; makes NASCAR record
Team Penske's Joey Logano drove down victory lane in the South Point 400 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Following the end of the race, Logano expressed his feelings about advancing to the final round at Phoenix Raceway.
The #22 driver's fate changed after Hendrick Motorsports driver Alex Bowman failed NASCAR's post-race inspection at Charlotte, where he was found to not meet the weight limit. Logano took full advantage of the opportunity and will now appear in the championship 4 for the sixth time in his career, which he oddly seems to do every even year since 2014.
Following the end of the race, Logano spoke with NASCAR and shared his thoughts on the risky pit road call to stay out and manage fuel, and making it to the final 4.
"Hey to my kids at home, I wish you guys were out here but we're going to Championship 4 again. I don't know what the deal is with the even-year thing but maybe it's real," Logano said.
"It takes the whole team to do the fuel mileage stuff it's not just the engine, the engineers, or the driver, the spotter, it takes all of us together to do it, so a total team win. We may not been the fastest car today but we were a solid top-five car" he added.
