William Byron has recently spoken about the new Charlotte Motor Speedway Roval track layout ahead of Sunday’s NASCAR Cup playoff race. Byron predicted that Bank of America ROVAL 400 at Charlotte Roval could get particularly chaotic in turn 7, where he expects “a lot of dice bombs.”
Heading to the Charlotte, William Byron described turn 7 at the Charlotte Roval as a challenging part of the road course where aggressive moves are likely to happen. He is expecting bold and risky overtaking attempts at turn 7 because a hairpin has been added at turn 7 of the infield course that could lead to close racing and potential collisions.
NASCAR journalist Peter Stratta on X reported that the #24 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet driver predicts the possibilities of aggressive moves in turn 7 at Charlotte Roval.
Here’s what Byron said, as reported by Stratta:
“Turn 7 is a U-turn really, I think you'll see a lot of dice bombs there..,”
Byron believes that the way turn 7 has been shaped will bring an opportunity for drivers to make their moves.
“The way that corner's shaped there's no other way to pass if you're close to somebody,” Byron added.
NASCAR made changes to the two sections of the Charlotte Roval this year. The first change has been made to turn 6, and a hairpin has been introduced as turn 7. Second, turn 16 has been made tighter than the previous track layout.
“Turn seven will probably have a lot of havoc”: William Byron spotter
Branden Lines, who serves as a spotter for William Byron and the #24 HMS team, also believes that the turn 7 at Charlotte Roval is likely to cause chaos because the angles required to navigate as a spotter are different from the previous layout.
Expressing his thoughts on the revamped Charlotte road course, here’s what Lines said (via Hendrick Motorsports):
“Most road courses we go to, you can only see a partial amount. Now we're going to a road course where you can see the whole thing, so you definitely feel more engaged. Turn seven will probably have a lot of havoc, the angles you have to make to make the corner are definitely going to be different than before”.
After a P3 finish at Talladega last week, William Byron locked his berth into the Round of 8. Certainly, that takes pressure off from him for Sunday’s Charlotte Roval race. He is currently leading the Cup Series points table and will start from 10th position in the final playoff race of Round of 12.
