Kyle Larson recently absolved Goodyear of any blame for the lackluster Bristol race last week. Many supporters even urged him to start his own podcast, while others praised his insightful explanations on social media.
Kyle Larson won his fifth race of the season and his first in the playoffs at Bristol Motor Speedway commandingly, leading 462 out of 500 laps. Historically, passing at Bristol has been challenging, with few lead changes, an exception being this year's spring race which recorded an unprecedented 54 lead changes.
The spike was attributed to Goodyear’s introduction of softer tires, which necessitated pit stops as soon as 30 laps [for many] of the race start. In that race, Kyle Larson secured a P5 finish after starting from P10, despite encountering numerous tire issues on the pit road. Reflecting on the challenging race, Larson from the #5 team expressed his determination to avoid such scenarios in the future, stating he never intends to run a race like that again.
Fast forward to last week's race at Bristol- this time around, the tires held up until lap 125, which led some fans to criticize Goodyear for not replicating the spring race’s tire strategy, contributing to an uninteresting race. However, Kyle Larson defended Goodyear by referencing past statistics and typical track conditions, urging fans to moderate their expectations. He elaborated on this by saying:
"All this tire wear talk about Bristol got me wondering… have we ever had a lot tire wear at Bristol besides the spring of 24? Eh, not much of any. Have we seen great races there? Absolutely. Have we seen duds where Kyle Busch leads 300+laps? Sure. [...] Bristol’s ALWAYS been tough to pass."
"I don’t have the answer to fix what we currently have and neither do you but please stop blaming Goodyear. It’s not a tire problem. And also, have any of you ran around Bristol with or without PJ1? Or resin for that matter. Yeah that’s right… so 🤐 Temper your expectations. We’re driving spec race cars."
Fans reacting to his post on his official X handle said:
"You should start a podcast Kyle. I think people would like to hear your thoughts on things more often."
