Former NASCAR driver Kenny Wallace has fired back at critics who complained about the uneventful Bristol Night Race, where Kyle Larson secured a dominant victory, leading 462 laps of the 500-lap race, last Saturday, September 21.
While the Spring Bristol race promised to deliver an exciting playoff showdown with high tire degradation, Saturday night’s race unfolded in stark contrast. Drivers were able to extend their stints, with very few cautions to bunch up the field. Consequently, the playoff bubble remained relatively unchanged, with only minor fluctuations resulting from penalties issued to Martin Truex Jr. and Ty Gibbs.
NASCAR fans expressed their disappointment about the lackluster race at Bristol Motor Speedway. However, Kenny Wallace, who was present among the approximately 90,000 spectators, had a differing opinion. He highlighted various positive aspects of the race, including Larson's dominant victory.
"I would highlight the pit road speeding penalties, by Ty Gibbs, by Martin Truex. I would highlight drivers in and out of the championship chase. I would highlight Kyle Larson's total domination, leads every lap except 38 laps." he said on his YouTube channel. [from 1:56]
The 61-year-old insisted that expectations for the Bristol Night Race were unnecessarily high. He cited former Daytona 500 winner Michael Waltrip, suggesting that not every race will be a thriller and that there will inevitably be a few blowouts.
"I call you people out, you're too much. You're a case for the couch, as Mama would say... You want too much, you're mad that NASCAR's doing good but yet you still watch. It's like Michael Waltrip said, 'Not every baseball game, not every football game going to be 21-21, you're going to have some blowouts.' But still last night was a good race," he added.
Kenny Wallace quotes Scott Bloomquist while praising Kyle Larson
Following Kyle Larson's dominant victory, Kenny Wallace quoted the late Scott Bloomquist, suggesting the #5 Hendrick Motorsports driver delivered a thorough "Tennessee a** whipping" to the rest of the field. Here's what he posted on X (formerly Twitter):
"As Scott Bloomquist would say.. @KyleLarsonRacin is given a Tennessee a** whippin tonight at Bristol 🏁"
Wallace also praised Larson's ability to navigate through the lapped traffic, which made the race more interesting. Larson had no competition for the entire 500-lap race but encountered lapped traffic throughout.
Larson swept both stages and ultimately crossed the finish line seven seconds ahead of his Hendrick Motorsports teammate Chase Elliott. All four HMS drivers have advanced to the Round of 12, with Larson entering the second round as the top seed thanks to a 39-point advantage.
The NASCAR Cup Series returns to Kansas Speedway this weekend, where Larson narrowly edged out Chris Buescher by a mere 0.001 seconds to claim victory earlier in the season.
