NASCAR has been entertaining motorsport fans since its conception in 1948. However, there are a few tracks on the 2024 schedule (Cup, Xfinity and Truck Series) that date back to as early as 1903.
While some tracks have gained a massive fan following since their inauguration, a few others have gained popularity after making crucial changes to the layout. Some of the popular old tracks this season include the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Darlington Raceway and the iconic Daytona International Speedway.
Seven oldest NASCAR tracks in 2024
Here's the list of the seven oldest NASCAR tracks in the 2024 schedule:
#7 Charlotte Motor Speedway (inaugurated in 1960)
Touted as the 'home race' for most teams on the grid, the Charlotte Motor Speedway was introduced in NASCAR in 1960.
Apart from the iconic 1.5-mile-long oval track, the venue also has a 2.28-mile-long road course known as the 'roval.' The track is known for hosting popular events, like the Coca-Cola 600 and Bank Of America ROVAL 400 during the Memorial Day Weekend.
#6 Daytona International Speedway (open for racing since 1959)
One of the most popular tracks around the world, the Daytona International Speedway became operational in 1959.
The legendary 2.5-mile-long tri-oval circuit is known for hosting popular races like the Coke Zero Sugar 400, the Daytona 500 and the Rolex 24 at Daytona. The venue was awarded the SportsBusiness Journal’s 'Sports Facility of the Year' award in 2016.
#5 Darlington Raceway (operational since 1950)
Renowned for its egg-shaped design and challenging conditions, the Darlington Raceway has been entertaining NASCAR fans since 1950.
Nicknamed 'The Lady in Black,' the 1.366-mile-long circuit hosts the legendary 'Southern 500' race, generally held on the Labor Day weekend. It also hosts the 'Goodyear 400' race, which is dubbed 'The Official Throwback Weekend of NASCAR.'
#4 Martinsville Speedway (racing began in 1947)
Founded by the late Clay Earles, Martinsville Speedway opened for racing in 1947, a few months before the next track on the list.
The 0.526-mile-long track happens to be the only one to host a NASCAR Cup Series race every year, since 1949. One of the shortest tracks in the 2024 schedule, Martinsville is known for hosting the popular Xfinity 500 race.
The venue is also one of the favorites among fans, due to close racing and great view.
#3 North Wilkesboro Speedway (opened in 1947)
Known for hosting the iconic All-Star Open race, the North Wilkesboro Speedway has been a part of the NASCAR Cup Series since 1947.
The 0.625-mile-long oval track hosted at least one NASCAR race every year until it was abandoned in 1996. However, after two unsuccessful revival attempts and major renovation, NWS became a part of the Cup Series in 2022.
#2 Indianapolis Motor Speedway (operational since 1909)
Built in the pre-world-war era, Indianapolis Motor Speedway has been hosting auto racing for over 100 years.
The 2.5-mile-long rectangular race track had formerly hosted the United States Grand Prix, before becoming a part of NASCAR in 1994. The inaugural Cup Series race on the legendary circuit was won by Indiana-based racer Jeff Gordon.
#1 Milwaukee Mile Speedway (open for racing since 1903)
As the name suggests, the 1.015-mile-long Milwaukee Mile Speedway is one of the oldest tracks on the 2024 NASCAR schedule.
Designed to be a dirt track, the venue was revamped and paved in 1954 for open-wheel racing events. The legendary oval circuit will host the first race of the 2024 Truck Series Playoff on August 25.
