Richard Petty Motorsports History
Richard Petty Motorsports was an American professional stock car racing team that competed in the NASCAR Cup Series. The team was founded when a merger took place between Gillet Evernham Motorsports (GEM) and Petty Enterprises. Petty Enterprises was a NASCAR racing team that was founded by Lee Petty and his two sons - Richard Petty and Maurice Petty. Richard later owned the team along with his son Kyle Petty and Boston Ventures.
The team operated the No. 43 and No. 45 Dodge Chargers in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. Petty Enterprises ran from 1949 until 2008, and shut down in January 2009, merging with Gillet Evernham Motorsports. The reason for this merger was the lack of sponsors for cars under the name Petty Enterprises. The merged team was renamed Richard Petty Motorsports, which later changed to Petty GMS Motorsports, and in 2023 the team rebranded as Legacy Motor Club.

Later in 2021, it was announced that GMS Motorsports owner Maurice J. Gallagher Jr. had purchased majority stakes in the team. Medallion also confirmed that it had sold all shares to Gallagher. The confirmation asserted that the team will now be rebranded as Petty GMS Motorsports, which was later changed to Legacy Motor Club.
