Reigning NASCAR Cup Series champion Ryan Blaney and his fellow NASCAR drivers recently delved into their favorite racing movies. The drivers put forward a multitude of names, ranging from some of the highest-grossing movies to some lesser-known gems.
The world of motorsports has expanded far beyond the confines of the racetrack, growing its presence through social media, promotions, and, notably, the film industry. Over the years, numerous movies have depicted the thrill and drama of racing, either through fictional narratives or real-life stories.
Recently, in an interview with Chat Us Up, multiple NASCAR drivers shed light on their favorite movies. These range from eminent movies starring Hollywood superstars to documentaries covering some of the most significant races in the world of motorsports.
Here’s a glimpse into the favorite racing films of five NASCAR drivers:
1. Ryan Blaney
The reigning champion and driver for Team Penske, Ryan Blaney has made a significant mark in NASCAR, securing his first Cup title last year and winning twice this season already. Blaney named three favorite racing movies: Days of Thunder, Talladega Nights, and Rush.
• Days of Thunder (1990): This classic film stars Tom Cruise as a young, hotshot stock car driver who climbs the ranks of NASCAR. Over the years, Days of Thunder has cemented its place in the minds of NASCAR fans as one of the greatest motorsport movies ever made.
• Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby (2006): A comedic take on the racing scene, this movie features Will Ferrell as Ricky Bobby, a top NASCAR driver who must overcome personal and professional challenges. Its humor and racing sequences have earned it a special place in the hearts of many.
• Rush (2013): Directed by Ron Howard, this biographical sports film chronicles the intense rivalry between Formula One drivers James Hunt and Niki Lauda during the 1976 season.
2. Denny Hamlin
A veteran of the sport and a stalwart at Joe Gibbs Racing, Denny Hamlin has over 50 Cup race wins under his belt and has already clinched three victories this season. When asked to name his favorite movie, Hamlin was as clear as they get, as he unequivocally named Talladega Nights.
3. William Byron
As one of Hendrick Motorsports’ top prospects, William Byron has enjoyed a successful career, winning multiple races last season and qualifying for the Championship 4. With three wins this season, Byron continues to shine.
Akin to Ryan Blaney, William Byron's favorite racing movie is also the Tom Cruise-starrer Days of Thunder.
4. Alex Bowman
Hendrick Motorsports driver Alex Bowman has had a rollercoaster career, driving iconic cars like the No. 88 and No. 48 Chevrolet. Despite struggling with injuries and a recent win drought, he broke through with a victory in Chicago.
Similar to his teammate Byron, Bowman’s favorite racing movie is also Days of Thunder.
5. Noah Gragson
Former Xfinity Series standout Noah Gragson is currently driving for Stewart-Haas Racing after facing a suspension last season. He is set to join Front Row Motorsports in 2025. Gragson mentioned two favorites: Talladega Nights and the documentary Dust to Glory.
Released in 2005, Dust to Glory is a documentary that provides an in-depth look at the Baja 1000, one of the most challenging off-road races in the world.
