Hendrick Motorsports driver William Byron discussed his aim for more consistent finishes heading into the 2024 NASCAR playoffs. While the start to his current season was extremely positive, he seems to have lost momentum over the races.
Byron has consistently improved his position in the Cup Series through the seasons. He finished the championship in third place last season. The fact that he has raced with Hendrick Motorsports throughout his career in the series has given him more stability with the car, helping to gather better results.
The 2024 season started on a high for William Byron. He managed to win the Daytona 500 starting from P18. This marked his first win of the grand season-opening race. This momentum followed him at COTA and then at Martinsville. With three wins in the first eight rounds of the season, Byron locked himself up for the playoffs and remained a strong contender for the championship.
However, his form seemingly took a hit recently. In races at Sonoma, New Hampshire, Indianapolis, and the Daytona (Coca-Cola 400), he finished well out of the top 25. Although his qualifying position was still satisfactory in those races, crashes led to DNFs which affected his position in the standings.
Can William Byron claim his first Cup Series championship with "consistent" performances in the playoffs?
The reset at the start of the 2024 playoffs can give William Byron the chance to fight for his first Cup Series title. Other than the races that were previously discussed, he has remained in good competition. For example, he was within the top five in multiple races despite his fading form in recent rounds. He finished P2 at Iowa and Michigan.
The #24 Chevrolet driver is currently in a dire need to consistently finish within the top places as the playoff elimination rounds kick off. Considering his improving form over the years, he could be in a good position to fight for the title. At the same time, his teammate Kyle Larson is also in a good spot to fight for his second title. However, that should not be a major barrier to Byron.
Speaking to NASCAR journalist Bob Pockass earlier, Byron talked about the same. He stated how being consistent during the summer would be a huge positive for him and the team.
"I feel like we're pretty confident group," William Byron said. "I think it's hard to motivate ourselves in the summer when we've already won races. So I feel like the playoffs is a chance to reset and go from there."
"Partly and I think we've been up and down and ideally we'd want to have a really consistent, great summer, but I think the emphasis is put on winning and that's what we see with the format. So we just try to race to that."
William Byron came close to winning the championship in the 2023 season, finishing in third place. While his teammate Kyle Larson finished second, it was Ryan Blaney who claimed the title. Byron, however, could be looking at a positive end to the season if he gets back on track and retains the form he had earlier in the season.
