Winning races in the NASCAR Cup Series is all about teamwork. Whether it is the driver, pit crew, spotters, or pit boss, everyone has to work in tandem to maximize the result during a race weekend.
Since the beginning of the modern era in NASCAR (post-1972), teamwork has become crucial over raw talent. With the performance of race cars becoming uniform throughout the grid, it relied more on teams providing the right information to the driver at the right moment to edge over their rivals.
Most teams pitch multiple drivers every season to increase their chances of winning more races. This strategy has proven useful for top teams such as Joe Gibbs Racing, Hendrick Motorsports, Roush Fenway Racing, and a few others.
Here's a look at the top five teams with the most wins in a particular NASCAR Cup Series season.
5. Junior Johnson and Associates (12 wins in the 1981 and 1982 NASCAR Cup Series seasons)
With Darrell Waltrip at the wheel of the #11 race car, Junior Johnson and Associates (formerly Johnson Hodgdon Racing) went on to dominate the Cup Series in both the 1981 and 1982 seasons. The three-time Cup Series champion managed to win 12 races in both years, putting himself and the team in an elite club.
4. Petty Enterprises (13 wins in the 1975 Cup Series season)
During the early years of NASCAR's modern era, Petty Enterprises reigned supreme. The Richard Petty-owned team won 13 races in the 1975 Cup Series season, with Petty himself in the driver's seat. This feat by the seven-time Cup Series champion helped his team defeat their rivals with relative ease that year. As for Petty, he jointly holds the record with Jeff Gordon for most wins by a driver in a season.
3. Roush Fenway Racing (15 wins in the 2005 Cup Series season)
Roush Fenway Racing dominated the 2005 NASCAR Cup Series season, racking up 15 wins. The team also set a record by placing five drivers (Greg Biffle, Kurt Busch, Mark Martin, Carl Edwards, and Matt Kenseth) in the top 10 racers that qualified for the 'Chase for the Cup' sprint race that year.
2. Hendrick Motorsports (18 wins in the 2007 Cup Series season)
With the likes of Kyle Busch, Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson, and Casey Mears in a four-car line-up, Hendrick Motorsports dominated the 2007 NASCAR Cup Series season with 18 wins. The season was unique as two different types of cars were used during the 36-race season (20 races with fourth-generation cars and 16 races with fifth-generation ones). Apart from 2007, HMS also dominated the 1996, 1998, 2004, 2009, 2014, and 2021 seasons with 12, 14, 13, 13, 13, and 17 wins, respectively.
1. Joe Gibbs Racing (19 wins in the 2019 Cup Series season)
With over 340 race wins in the Cup Series and Xfinity Series, Joe Gibbs Racing is considered one of the most successful teams in NASCAR. In the 2019 Cup Series season, the team set the record for the most wins (19) by a team in a season, beating HMS's 2007 record of 18 wins. Kyle Busch, Denny Hamlin, Martin Truex Jr., and Erik Jones were the drivers for the season. Joe Gibbs Racing was also dominant in the 2013, 2015, and 2016 seasons with 12, 14, and 12 wins, respectively.
