NASCAR is considered to be the most elite level of stock car racing. The cars used in NASCAR reach a blistering high speed of 190 mph. They are heavily modified for track use and to bring out the maximum performance of the car every race.

NASCAR relies on a lot of technology and is not only about having the fastest car, but it involves having the fastest car for a longer period of time. Any NASCAR race is a combination of strategy, performance and tire management. The tires get degraded at a very high pace during any race.

NASCAR tires have to bear the load of the car for extended durations, often running the car full throttle. They get intensely hot and have a lot of tire wear during any stint of the race. When the tire is degraded to the point that it can’t be raced on safely, drivers pit for new tires and continue the race. NASCAR tires are very difficult to last the entire race.

They are crucial for commiting to the speed or even trying any overtaking maneuver. In any vehicle tires are the most important factor in deciding the real time performance of the vehicle. In NASCAR, the degrading tires keep decreasing the speed and per lap performance of vehicles.

The tracks in NASCAR vary in their length, total number of laps and banking, making the tire wear and its performance crucial in every race.

Tires used in NASCAR

The tires used in NASCAR come in two varieties supplied by Goodyear. They are Slick tires and Wet Weather tires. The tyre compound is decided by NASCAR prior to any race. Tire compound is the determining factor which helps a tire bring out the maximum result on any track.

A softer tire will produce faster lap times and the harder compound is going to reduce tire wear. NASCAR tires are produced differently according to the side of the car they will be used on. NASCAR tires are radial tires at their core but their requirements are to be as grippy as possible, provide the stability at high temperatures and get changes quickly. Goodyear introduced a set of newer 18 inch tires to accompany the Next-Gen car.

What are the differences between NASCAR tires and regular car tires?

Goodyear uses multi-zone technology on the tires which fit on the right side of the vehicle. It consists of two different tread compounds on the same tire. A two-inch inboard, which is designed for heat resistance and a 10 inch outboard designed to provide more traction. The tracks which are longer than one mile require two layers in a single tire. The inner tire and outer tire.

This is to help the drivers stop safely in case of blowout at the high speed ovals. The tires are also bald but this isn’t because they are old. The sticky rubber needs to make contact with the road so that it can provide maximum traction. The only similarity between the regular tires and NASCAR tires is the fact that they are radials. NASCAR tires are way more advanced and faster than regular tires.

What happens to NASCAR tires after a race?

NASCAR tires aren’t simply scrapped after a race. Every tire is analyzed carefully to determine the actual wear by scraping off the debris collected while it was racing hot. These tires provide crucial track data to the team which helps them improve the behavior of the car in the upcoming races.

The used NASCAR tires are then returned to Goodyear who recycle the tire and then provide it with a new tread making it ready for race use again. Blown-out and destroyed tires are scrapped in the normal ways.
