Joey Logano was just 18 years old the first time he strapped into a NASCAR Cup Series car. The Middletown, Connecticut native eventually became the youngest driver to ever win a Cup Series race at 19 years, and 35 days old. Since then, the now-34-year-old has gone on to have a series of NASCAR successes, most significantly becoming a two-time Cup Series champion and winning the 2015 Daytona 500.

Here, we'll dive into the history and racing roots of one of the most prolific NASCAR drivers in the field today.

Logano's early career

Logano was born in Middletown, Connecticut on May 24, 1990. He delved into the sport of racing at a young age and quickly found success, winning three consecutive Eastern Grand National championships in the Junior Stock Car Quarter Midget Division between 1997-1999. He wasn't even 10 years old and already had three championships to his name.

The same year he won his third straight Eastern Grand National title (1999), Logano won the National Bandolero Bandits championship. In 2002, Logano won the Young Lions National Championship and became the youngest Legends championship winner by winning the Pro National Championship the same year.

Making it to NASCAR

Logano made his debut in the NASCAR Xfinity Series driving for Joe Gibbs Racing in 2008. In just his third career start, the rookie won at Kentucky Speedway to become the youngest winner in Xfinity Series history at 18 years, 21 days old.

After Tony Stewart left JGR in 2008 to pursue co-owning and driving for Stewart-Haas Racing, Logano filled the role of driving the No. 20 Toyota full-time starting in 2009. In a rain-shortened race at New Hampshire, Logano became the youngest driver to win a Cup Series race that year.

The upstart couldn't find victory lane between 2010 and 2011 and failed to finish higher than 16th in the final standings in both seasons. In 2012, Logano won his second career Cup race at Pocono Raceway after passing veteran Mark Martin in the final laps.

Move to Team Penske

Logano's four-year stint with JGR ended in 2012 as he signed with Team Penske to pilot the No. 22 Ford full-time starting in 2013. He claimed his first win with the team that year at Michigan and made the NASCAR Playoffs for the first time in his career, finishing the season eighth.

Logano's breakout season would be 2014. He won five races, recorded 16 top-fives, 22 top-tens, and made the inaugural Championship 4 race at Homestead-Miami Speedway, where he finished fourth among the title drivers. The next season, Logano found six wins, including the 2015 Daytona 500, 22 top-fives, and 28 top-tens, but failed to make it to the Championship 4 race.

Logano finished runner-up to Jimmie Johnson, who won a record-tying seventh Cup championship, in 2016 after securing three wins, 16 top-fives, and 26 top-tens.

First championship

After failing to make the playoffs in 2017, Logano won early in the 2018 season at Talladega to clinch a postseason spot. Logano made it all the way to the Round of 8, and in the first race of that round at Martinsville, Logano put the bumper to Martin Truex Jr. in the final turns to win and claim a Championship 4 spot.

In a battle between himself, Truex Jr., Kevin Harvick, and Kyle Busch, Logano captured the 2018 NASCAR Cup Series championship at Homestead-Miami Speedway after earning his third win of the season. It was Logano's first Cup title and first for Team Penske since 2012 with Brad Keselowski.

Second Championship

Logano tallied two wins in 2019 but failed to make the Championship 4 and defend his title, ultimately finishing fifth in the standings. In 2020, Logano won three races and made it back to the Championship 4 after clinching a spot with a win at Kansas in the Round of 8. However, Chase Elliott ended up claiming the 2020 championship in the title race at Phoenix, while Logano finished third.

Logano won the inaugural Bristol Dirt Race which ended up being his sole victory in 2021. In 2022, the now-14-year veteran driver rose to the top again as he won four races, including the championship race at Phoenix, to grab his second NASCAR Cup Series title.

2023 and beyond

Last year was a setback for Logano as he managed to win at Atlanta early in the season, but was eliminated from the playoffs in the first round. This year, Logano grabbed his first win of the season at Nashville to clinch a spot in the playoffs. After his win this past week at Atlanta, he is one step closer to chasing down his third NASCAR Cup Series title as he clinched a spot in the Round of 12.
