Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson, Kevin Harvick, and Dale Earnhardt are the only four drivers in NASCAR history to secure a win in all the crown jewel races and achieve one of the biggest milestones.
Initially, the crown jewel had three races: the Daytona 500, the Coca-Cola 600, and the Southern 500. However, from 1994 onwards, NASCAR expanded the crown jewel races by adding the Brickyard 400 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway to the list.
So far, only four drivers have managed to clinch victories at these races to accomplish this unique feat.
On that note, let's look at these drivers' performances in the crown jewel races:
#4. Dale Earnhardt
Former NASCAR Cup Series driver Dale Earnhardt hails from Kannapolis, North Carolina, and secured eight wins in the crown jewel races. Dale Sr. won one race at the Daytona International Speedway in 1998, followed by a dominating performance in the Coca-Cola 600. He won three races at the Charlotte Motor Speedway in 1986, 1992, and 1993.
In 1987, 1989, and 1990, Earnhardt Sr. won three times at the Southern 500 race at the Darlington Raceway. His final win to achieve the legendary feat came in 1995 in the Brickyard 400 race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Additionally, Dale Sr. won the NASCAR Cup Series championship seven times in his 27-year career.
#3. Kevin Harvick
2014 NASCAR Cup Series champion Kevin Harvick won the Brickyard 400 in 2003 ahead of Matt Kenseth and Jamie McMurray. The Bakersfield native won two races at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in 2019 and 2020. Harvick had previously won the Daytona 500 win in 2007 before securing two wins at the Charlotte Motor Speedway, winning the Coca-Cola 600 in 2011 and 2013.
He completed his crown jewel grand slam by winning two Southern 500 races in 2014 and 2020. Harvick won the championship in 2014 recording five wins and in 2020 he concluded the season in fifth place scoring nine wins and 27 top-ten finishes.
#2. Jimmie Johnson
The 49-year-old NASCAR Cup Series driver Jimmie Johnson, aka 'Superman,' has won the grand slam three times. He began winning his crown jewel races from the Coca-Cola 600 race at Charlotte Motor Speedway. He secured four wins on the track starting in 2006, followed by wins in 2004, 2005, and 2014.
In 2004 Johnson won the Southern 500 race for the first time and bagged one more win in 2012 while driving for Hendrick Motorsports. Johnson's victory became HMS's 200th Cup Series win and the Cup Series driver expressed his feelings on the team's latest milestone:
"It's hard to describe how special that one is, it's forever on the wall. I was so stoked to get it. And to get the 200th in the Southern 500, a crown jewel event, too, it was awesome." (via Hendrick Motorsports)
In 2004 Johnson won the Southern 500 race for the first time and bagged one more win in 2012. After winning the Southern 500 race in 2004, he won the Daytona 500 race in 2004 and 2013. Superman completed his crown jewel achievement by securing a win in the Brickyard 400 in 2006, followed by three more wins in 2008, 2009, and 2012.
#1. Jeff Gordon
Hendrick Motorsports driver Jeff Gordon holds the record for most wins in the crown jewel races. Gordon won 17 races on the four tracks, showcasing his dominance in stock car racing. He won the Coca-Cola 600 and Brickyard 400 races in the same year. He won three races at the Charlotte Motor Speedway in 1994, 1997, and 1998. At the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Gordon secured five victories (1994, 1998, 2001, 2004, and 2014).
The four-time Cup Series champion was one of the drivers at the inaugural event of the Brickyard 400 race. Three decades later, Gordon refreshed his memories in an interview with NASCAR and said (via NASCAR):
"To celebrate that inaugural event is pretty amazing and a lot to tell. I mean, I think that that day, if you look at NASCAR’s popularity and where it sort of went to from those mid-90s, in that time in ’94 further, it obviously was a game-changer — not just for me, my career and the drivers that were there that were part of it, but just for the whole industry and motorsports in general," Gordon said.
Gordon dominated the Southern 500 race and won six races at the Darlington Raceway in 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 2002, and 2007. He completed the crown jewel by winning at the Daytona 500 in 1997, 1999, and 2005, making him the leader of the list.
