The 2024 NASCAR campaign came to a fiery conclusion at the Phoenix Raceway with Joey Logano winning his third Cup title. The thrilling campaign was filled with record-breaking stats, incredible moments, and high-voltage drama.
One of the most significant stat that came to light this season was that only a single driver emerged as the first-time winner. Harrison Burton, the former driver for Wood Brothers Racing and currently a competitor in the Xfinity Series, secured his first and only win of the season in the 2024 Coke Zero Sugar 400 race at Daytona International Speedway.
Known as "Daytona 2," Coke Zero Sugar 500 was the 24th race of the 2024 Cup Series campaign. Burton, a second-gen driver, and the son of Jeff Burton, secured his maiden career victory in the Cup Series in his third full campaign. It was also the 100th race win for Wood Brothers Racing, NASCAR's oldest active team.
Burton finished the race ahead of RCR's Kyle Busch. Christopher Bell of Joe Gibbs Racing finished third, and pole-winner Michael McDowell failed to finish inside the top 10. Joey Logano, the eventual winner of the series, led the most laps in the race.
Notably, it was the first time since 1985 that only a single driver emerged as the first-time winner of a season. It was only the 16th season in the history of NASCAR that such a stat came to light.
It was announced weeks before Burton's Daytona 2 win that Josh Berry would be replacing the 24-year-old in the WBR seat next season. Shortly after he was eliminated from the Cup Series playoff Round of 16, it was confirmed that Harrison Burton would mark a return to the Xfinity Series. He has signed a contract with AM Racing and will drive their No. 15 Ford full-time next season.
Take a look at some more notable stats from the 2024 NASCAR season
Besides Harrison Burton's win, other major stats came to light in the 2024 campaign. For instance, a total of eighteen different drivers secured victories in 2024, tying for the third-most in a season during NASCAR's modern era.
The season also marked the fourth consecutive year with more than 15 unique winners—a new all-time record. Furthermore, 23 drivers won at least one stage during the season, setting another all-time record.
The season also set a new benchmark for overtime. A total of thirteen races in 2024 extended into overtime, the most ever in a single season. Notably, Nashville Superspeedway saw five overtime attempts, with the race stretching an additional 31 laps—both records.
Six races ended with a last-lap pass, another record. Kansas Speedway and Talladega Superspeedway witnessed some of the closest finishes ever. Meanwhile, Atlanta Motor Speedway hosted the closest-ever three-wide finish of 0.003 seconds, with Daniel Suarez emerging as the winner.
Notably, pole winners struggled to translate their qualifying success into victories. In 2024, pole winners secured just two wins, marking only the fifth season in history with such a low conversion rate.
