For the first time in over half a century, NASCAR is bringing the Cup Series back to Winston-Salem’s iconic Bowman Gray Stadium. On February 2, 2025, the historic venue, known as “The Madhouse,” will host The Clash, an event that has long served as the unofficial season-opener in NASCAR’s calendar. This marks the first Cup Series race at the track since 1971

The reason for NASCAR's return to this iconic venue dates back to the very initiation of the stock car racing series. Built in 1937, it became the first weekly and paved track used by NASCAR after being introduced to motorsports by founders Bill France Sr. and Alvin Hawkins. Its connection to NASCAR dates back to its first race in 1949, a time when France was actively promoting stock car racing.

By 1958, Bowman Gray was a staple on NASCAR’s circuit, hosting over 1,000 sanctioned races. The circuit was a host for ARCA Series races till 2019. The decision to return to Bowman Gray Stadium stems from NASCAR’s effort to reconnect with its roots while appealing to a new generation of fans.

To prepare for its return to the national spotlight, the Stadium has undergone significant renovations. Over the past few years, NASCAR has partnered with the City of Winston-Salem and Winston-Salem State University to modernize the facility. The upgrades include a new lighting system provided by Musco Lighting, state-of-the-art catch fences, and the installation of a SAFER barrier, a critical safety feature designed to reduce the impact of crashes.

What did the NASCAR EVP say about the Cup Series' return to Bowman Gray in the official announcement?

In an official announcement earlier this year, NASCAR's executive vice president Ben Kennedy stated (via NASCAR.com):

"Part of being good stewards of Bowman Gray Stadium includes preparing it to host compelling events that rightfully place it in the national spotlight."

Kennedy, who also serves as NASCAR's chief venue and racing innovation officer, further extended his gratitude towards Musco. He said:

"We are grateful to Musco for providing the premium event lighting product to illuminate this historic venue. The preparations in advance of The Clash will position this national treasure as a showcase of national and grassroots racing for the next generation and beyond."

The day before, on February 1, Bowman Gray will host the Madhouse Classic, an invite-only exhibition race featuring the top 20 drivers from the 2024 Stadium Modified points standings.
